From Frederick Douglass to Booker T Washington to Obama
    1895-1915 skip to 2010
    By Andre Austin

In 1900 Booker T writes Up from Slavery which is different from his private letters.

In February 20, 1895 the late great Frederick Douglass died. He left his widow a white woman who he loved dearly after his first black wife had died. A void was for a national black leader whites could indirectly control and they found his man, Booker T Washington.

The white power structure seized the moment when Washington gave his famous “Atlanta Compromise” speech in September of 1895. Washington was advising the southern and northern whites to hire black workers instead of immigrants who were on their way to America. Washington didn’t care for politics because he felt economic power was more important. Washington did believe in using laws to stop lynching and co-wrote a book with W.E.B Dubois which is rarely talked about if known to the masses at all. Washington said that we can be as separate on social issues as the five fingers are on my hand. Marcus Garvey loved Washington and named a ship after him. W.E.B Dubois wrote Washington shortly after his 1895 speech:

    From William Edward Burghardt Dubois

    Wilberforce 24, Sept ‘95

My dear Mr. Washington: Let me heartily congratulate you upon
Your phenomenal success at Atlanta-it was a word fitly spoken.
    Sincerely yours,
    W.E.B. Dubois

Dubois also wrote that Washington Atlanta address might be the basis of a real settlement between whites and blacks in the south. if whites opened the doors of economic opportunity and blacks cooperated with whites politically. Dubois latter said the aims of the Atlanta compromise were frustrated by the mass disfranchisement of blacks by southern whites.

Washington and Dubois set up a committee of 12 to address the problems of the Negro race. Dubois later resigned. In 1901 Dubois wrote Washington about going to a summer camp retreat:

“Dear Mr. Washington: I shall be delighted to accept your kind invitation of the
26th to camp in West VA. Very Sincerely,
    W.E.B. Dubois

By 1903 the battle between Dubois and Washington was on full blast.

    Booker T wrote Roscoe Bruce:
    April, 1903
Dear Mr. Bruce: Under all the circumstances I think it will be well to pay Dr. Dubois traveling expenses to Tuskegee and return for the sake of his lectures. If he chooses to be little we must teach him a lesson by bearing greater and broader than he is. Yours truly,

    Booker T. Washington

Now comes the block buster masterpiece book in 1903 The Souls Of Black Folk where Dubois beat up on Washington badder than Eldridge Cleaver butt whipped James Baldwin’s Notes of A Native Son. The only difference was Cleaver realized his mistakes and apologized to James something the aristocrat Dubois could never do. Dubois problem with dealing with people who were bigger than him was to build up public sentiment among white people and the government to legally go after Washington and Garvey. He couldn’t contain his criticism to a courteous debate but an attempt to jail and exile other black leaders he couldn’t compete with. He ended up exiling himself and ran a spy network with the government against black people he didn’t like.

Booker T reined supreme until his death in 1915. Like I said Garvey favored Washington. George Washington Carver the second after Dubois to get a PhD from Harvard admired Booker T and Garvey and so did the followers of the NOI who formed in the 1930’s after Garvey was pardoned and throw out of the U.S.

Dubois wrote an article on the evolution of Negro leadership which has three stages a revolt, adjust and self-realization. Dubois plan of action was revolt and adjust:

    1. Dubois adjust=assimilation and political agitation of Laws

    2. Washington was self-realization in creating Black dynasty of Institutions

    3. Garvey =separation

    4. NOI= mental separation and reconnect with Africa. Become the middle men of their raw materials to sell to China and America.

5.Dr. King was Agape Love would supersede laws in changing hearts and minds of black and white folks to build an alliance together against crime, poverty and racism of corporations who used divide and conquer.

Dubois complained in complained that Washington bribed and subsidized all of the Negro newspapers to write in favor of him against Dubois. Dubois said that Washington also had the ear of the white press who sensationalized him to create him as a leader.
All of the above letters seriously indicate that Dubois wrote as a suppliant and was less powerful than the Tuskegee machine was t in Alabama from 1895-1915.

Dubois was a sociologist and he knew history very well. He should have known that black peoples alliance with white people has all ways been betrayed when it came to their interest to do so. When someone breaks an alliance with you need Black institutions and Dynasties to fall back on. Its okay to integrate but lets not integrate ourselves out of power to paraphrase Dr. King. You don’t integrate blacks and whites in public schools and then say well there is no need for HBU’s anymore. That would be insane. Nothing wrong with intermarriage but we also need strong all black dynasties too to rely on in times of a crisis. We are the only people who break our necks trying to get into Brandeis, holy cross, Notre Dame, even Brigham Young, and any other schools or dynasties committed to somebody’s tribal identity. We will give all our funds to build them up, but nothing to build up self. President Obama used a portion of his Nobel peace prize to the people of Haiti and HBU’s. This man is thinking smart but gave all the money away and didn’t leave some of it to his wife and kids like Mrs. King asked Martin when he won the prize. In a New York interview around 1997 the kids of MLK feel that the Nobel peace prize money was their birthright. Everybody teaches their tribal identity and pass on a legacy and economic power to each other except for blacks. Look at the Egyptian civilization wouldn’t have existed without Dynasties, which consist on a unified family units. Blacks have no family, the government replaced the man that’s absent from the house. We have no tribes to know who we are. Can’t say “Iam somebody” when you don’t even know the name of your father to create and write down a family tree. Obama said in his book “I’ve never had the option of restricting my loyalties on the basis of race, or measuring my worth on the basis of tribe…part of America’s genius has always been its ability to absorb newcomers, to forge a national identity” (Audacity of Hope p.231). This national identity is dysfunctional to blacks because the identity is still a “Double -Consciousness” and an “Invisible Man Syndrome” for the black masses of blacks in America. This false notion of a national identity allows Obama to have a gay agenda, Latino agenda and an Israeli agenda but a Black agenda must be under an umbrella of a universal agenda where the Blackman is a nobody. The NAACP is in part responsible for this because they didn’t want Black dynasties of black institutions they wanted blacks to integrate their money, body, genes, souls into white bodies a self suicide pact to be left naked if the whites withdrew their alliance and good will.

The whites seized the moment and the times just like they did the national media for the anointing of booker T Washington to be black folk leaders. Obama would have never been the love of the media if he wasn’t a mulatto. Because Obama will have nothing to loose if he wins a second term all energy will be generative by the former Confederate States will vote him or kill him out of office.

Will the De Bobalation of African-American slabery Continue and celumbrate it?

It is a lot more complex than you make it seem. Washington became the leader by building the one and only university built by an African ib this country. The fact that white people recognized him as the leader did not take away from the fact that he built this school in a chicken house by selling eggs and collecting pennies from poor African farmers.

As for Obama, he won the election because poor ordinary people all across this country sent him $5-10 to finance his campign while all of the other candidates were relying on million dollar donations from rich people and big business. So, you are right: there are similarities between Obama and Washington: both had to rely on the masses to gain power. Of course, in Obama's case, he has compromised with the very same people that he campaigned against, namely Hilary Clinton and Joe Biden. These two pretty much keep him under control, especially on Africa policy. The sanctions against Zimbabwe are still in force in no small part because both Clinton and Biden want to keep them in place to show solidarity with the anglo-saxon white supremacists, especially the British. So, we would be well served to beging work now to strengten Obama, not weaken him. If he cecomes stronger he will be in a better position to maybe get rid of both Biden and Clinton and replace them with someone who are not a knee jerk racists,

I like the idea of replacing Biden, but of course he will not.

Of course, that would not e easy to do. But, we can work to hurt Biden AND Clinton. Both are equally racist and evil towards African interests. The important thing is to strengthen Obama's hand in dealing with them. And, at the same time, we want to weaken them as much as possible. Ideally, we do not want to see Clnton or Biden succeed Obama as the next president. That is crucial. So, we ought to start working right now to stop both Biden and Clinton. In doing so, we must avoid hurting Obama. The time is long over due that we let those white supremacists know that they cannot take our votes for granted. Right now, our job is let them know that they cannot hide from us in Obama's shadow.
