    Twenty men came in 1619
    A kin to you
    A kin to me
    Despite collar and chain
    They fought to be free

For the next two hundred and forty six years
    Many broke free
    In spite of their fears
    They ran to the north
    They ran to the west
They just wanted to be freemen
    Nothing more, nothing less

Free to be miners of copper and gold
    Free to build the railroads
    Free black men
    Young and old
    They were cowboys and farmers
    Shipbuilders and Woodsmen
Men with nothing more than muscle
But free to do honest work
    For freemen a must
    Earning respect
    Earning trust

More than many escaped the whip
    Scattered among the Great Plains
Even further north across the border
    A future unsure
    But they were free
    With family in tow
    Incredible hardships
    We today could never know

    Freemen risking death
Risking the torture if found for a bounty
Free to be part of this great country
    Equality still a distant dream
    But free
    Free to dream
    Beginning with those who escaped
    From the original twenty
    In 1619
