Jamie and Gladys Scott have been wrongfully convicted of armed robbery and received double life sentences each. No one was murdered or taken to the hospital during this robbery, no one was even injured. A witness states that possibly $11 was netted. A victim states that about 200 bucks was in his wallet. Both victims and all witnesses say that the sisters did not participate in this robbery. Witnesses confessed during the trial, that the sheriff, Marvin Williams, coerced and threatened them into giving false testimony regarding the Scott Sisters. That testimony was obviously not taken into consideration. They have been in prison now for almost 15 years. ~~~~

There are many stories like this and cases of folks incarcerated like Hurricane Carter, in almost every lock-up in the nation,

but until we collectively look at the military prison comple with a critical eye,

instead of the eye of the conservative,
such instances will escalate as the economy declines,
and legal aid and pro-bono lawyers become a thing of the past

    A racist travesty of justice
The tragic case of the Scott sisters

Anyone who still believes that the U.S. is the most democratic and just country in the world has only to examine the shocking case of the Scott sisters to be disabused of that erroneous notion. While this case is becoming more and more well-known by word of mouth, mainly on the Internet, the 16-year-old case has never received the national and international media attention that it so richly deserves. The facts of the case will explain the reason why....

    JULY 22, 2010: UPDATE

    http://freethescottsisters.blogspot.com/

    PLEASE WRITE THE SCOTT SISTERS!

Jamie and Gladys need to read from you, please let them know that you care by dropping them a card or a letter. It would mean a whole lot to them if you would do so! If you would like to send money in, you must go to http://www.inmatedeposits.com , register for Access Corrections and use each of their name and number to make your donation. They each would be very grateful, Jamie even has to purchase her own food as the prison won't pay for her special medical diet.

NAACP LEADER ASKS FOR PARDON FOR SCOTT SISTERS

NAACP President & CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous asks Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour to pardon two sisters serving double-life sentences

Jamie & Gladys Scott incarcerated since 1994 for alleged robbery yielding $11

JACKSON, Ms. – NAACP President & CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous requested a pardon from Governor Haley Barbour Tuesday for two sisters incarcerated since 1994 despite troubling questions regarding the accuracy of witness testimony, possible coercion and potential racial bias.
Known as the “Scott Sisters”, Jamie and Gladys Scott were convicted in a 1994 armed robbery which yielded $11, a crime in which they have consistently denied any involvement. Both sisters were sentenced to double-life sentences and have remained imprisoned since their convictions, despite the fact that they were convicted primarily on testimony from three teenagers reportedly coerced by the County Sherriff’s office. One of the witnesses has since recanted his statement and acknowledged that the Scott Sisters are innocent.
In a letter to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, Jealous requests a pardon for the Scott Sisters based on several grounds. In addition to the legitimate questions regarding the accuracy of the testimony against the Scott Sisters and the questionable manner in which it was obtained, Jealous cites the fact that their sentences were excessively severe given the nature of the alleged crime.
“It is a travesty that in the state of Mississippi, the lives of two Black women are valued at little more than 11 dollars,” said Jealous. “From the outset, the measures in which the Scott Sisters were convicted were questionable and pattern themselves after dubious criminal justice trends in Mississippi and nationwide. We intend to pursue justice to the fullest extent for the Scott Sisters, and will continue our push for criminal justice reform throughout America.”
The NAACP also expressed concern over a history of questionable judgments by Marcus Gordon, the judge who presided over the Scott Sisters’ case. In 1964, Judge Gordon granted bail to the KKK murderer of three civil rights workers.
In addition to the pardon, Jealous’ letter asks that Governor Barbour grant a “compassionate medical release” to Jamie Scott in light of her current medical condition. Scott lost renal function in both of her kidneys and cannot survive without a transplant; her sister and several others have agreed to be a donor but the Department of Corrections has refused to allow any tests to determine donor compatibility.
