Helping those in need was the essence of Fred Hampton Jr.'s short life and tragic death.

But his name lives on through his family and every year they help those who are pursuing an education in law through the Fred Hampton Scholarship Fund.

This year's scholarship recipient is Meta Brown, a third-year law student at John Marshall Law School. She received $500 to help her with her educational pursuits.

Scholarship organizers met Sept. 18 at Maywood Public Library to present the scholarship to the recipients as well as recognize those who have made a positive impact in Maywood, Hampton's hometown.

William "Bill" Hampton, president of Fred Hampton Scholarship Fund and Fred's brother, hosted the event.,maywood-fredhampton-091023-s1.article
