    I have concluded that the answer is 6, but my friends beg to differ, saying it's 9. I came up with 6 because of the way the sequence or pattern looks: 8*7=56 ; 7*6 = 42 ; 6*5 = 30 ; 5*4=20 ; 4*3=12 (which isn't shown) ; and 3*2= 6...If I'm wrong, prove it to me. I have no problem admitting if I am wrong, but I don't see how the answer is 9!

    Dayum! I'm as "dumb" as you are! I got 6, too! :lol:

    8-1=7; 8x7=56
    7-1=6; 7x6=42
    6-1=5; 6x5=30
    5-1=4; 4x5=20
    (4-1=3; 3x5=15)
    3-1=2; 3x2=6

    The first numbers decrease by 1; the 2nd numbers decrease by 1!

    I kept explaining that to them, but they kept on saying, that I am not supposed to factor that number (4) in there since it's not in the sequence, and I'm like HUH????

    I get how your friends came up with 9 as the answer! :lol:
    They went:
    8x7=56
    7x6=42
    6x5=30
    5x4=20
    then skipping 4 altogether:
    3x3=9

    And because they broke the pattern, they were wrong. :SuN020:

    all the numbers in the sequence are always oblong numbers but never square numbers so 9 is definitly out

    I got 9. They aren't asking for 4 so I assume you don't have to solve for 4. They are jumping from 5 to 3 and so the next logical number is 9, if you follow the sequence.
