And it begins...

"The Michigan attorney general on Wednesday sued French water company Veolia and a Texas firm for "botching" their roles in the city of Flint's drinking water crisis that exposed residents to dangerously high lead levels.

Attorney General Bill Schuette said at a news conference in Flint that the civil lawsuit was filed in Genesee County Circuit Court against Veolia Environnement SA (VIE.PA) and Houston-based engineering services firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam (LAN).

The lawsuit charged Veolia with professional negligence and fraud that caused Flint's the lead poisoning to continue and worsen, and LAN with professional negligence.

Schuette said the state is seeking damages from the companies that could total hundreds of millions of dollars. His office said additional claims against the firms or others may be filed in the future.

The city announced Saturday that it will suspend trash pickup indefinitely beginning Monday while a judge works out a weeks-old disagreement between city officials. The disruption in services is the result of a battle between the mayor and the city council over which company to grant the city’s trash contract to after the most recent one expired Friday ...

After 1,000 days, Flint is still without clean drinking water

According to both both government officials and environmental researchers, there has been a steady decline in the overall levels of lead and other bacteria in Flint’s drinking water since it returned to Detroit’s system in October 2015. Still, the immense damage caused by pumping improperly treated river water through the city’s aged lead pipes is far from fixed ...

We still haven’t made things right in Flint

By Irwin Redlener

... To date, 15 Michigan officials have been indicted over the scandal. But that won’t help the estimated up to 12,000 children exposed to excessive lead, most of them from Flint’s poorest families.
