    In the voices of my people
    I hear angel's trumpets
    wafted upon a thousand rainbows,
    a thousand raindrops,
    a thousand treetops,
    a thousand rooftops;
    like streams sweetly unraveled
    upon rocks well placed
    in brooks shaded by vaunted sycamore trees.

    I gots more-

    I remember well the voices of the past
    my mama's, my grandma's-
    my aunties, my sisters-
    on riverboats along the Mississippi
    bring me Dizzy's Guillipse,
    Louis Strongarm up against
    Ella's Summertime-
    or John's CoolTrain washing over me
    in waves of Lena's Horne;
    come wash my feet in Indigo Moods
    of pain and suffering,
    the whip and the lash
    bring me strange fruit
    from Nina's SweetMoan.

    Baptise me in the waters of that
    onliest Monk
    on mornings ice cream cold.

    On the wings of these voices
    the souls of my people will forever soar.
