Hello everyone my name is Alexandria I am a 24 yr old visual artist and specifically portrait artist who happens to love writing as well. I am glad to be able to post here once again among other great story tellers after so long! I was on a hiatus from writing but I am looking to gain feed back from this short novel (written as a screenplay) I am beginning on where I plan to include my paintings as well as polaroid photography. The two main characters Lark and Bishop are inspired by me and my boyfriend who is a nyc street polaroid photographer . I hope it will be an enjoyable read as I plan to use the screen play format to help my audience picture every word visually down to music and visuals ^_^ thank you to anyone who finds the time to give critical feed back! (and also music suggestions) Intro- Flamingo by Duke Ellington is playing FADE IN: Flamingo the title in pink EXT: EAST HARLEM - DAY -(year is unknown) BISHOP is riding his bike uptown. CUT TO- LARK “I have something for you too” (Lark leaves her bed for the first time that morning. Goes to her book shelf and grabs Hamlet.) CUT TO- Bishop nods. Takes the book, putting it in his back pocket. He points to one of her unfinished paintings of a pregnant woman with question in his expression. CUT TO- LARK “Not sure how to finish her.” Always with a pen and pad, he writes. BISHOP “It'll come” CUT TO- Lark sits next to her piece. She leans on the corner of the canvas. He uses this opportunity to take a flick on his polaroid. Lark happens to look up at the same exact moment. LARK “You must have a million pictures of me by now since you got that thing!” CUT TO- Bishop smiling. Shrugs. Pulls the photo out of the camera. Turning his eyebrows up, he shakes his head at the photo in disapproval. CUT TO- LARK “Why don’t you ever let me see them?…(smirks) You should let me get a swing at it” Bishop pauses as he is thinking he pulls out his pad to write a message. (Lark shakes her head at him.) Bishop leaves the note on her desk. CUT TO- LARK “Im assuming thats for later” Bishop nods. LARK “Alright, well lets get out of here I’m tired of being cooped up.” Bishop gives her a look as if he doubts her request. CUT TO- LARK “Get your ball I wanna go play some hoops” Bishop reluctant. Bishop takes out his camera and takes a shot. LARK “Don’t you know you shouldn’t take pictures of the dead!”(Whispers) “Lark!” Lark turns to the church entrance. Pan fast to the front entrance. HORATIO Larks dad enters. He is a tall built, golden brown with piercing brown eyes, his hair slicked down with grease. His arms are crossed in front of his chest. HORATIO “What you doing out the house? Your mother know you not home?” LARK “No,... who is that man Daddy?” HORATIO “Don’t concern yourself with that, I want you to go back home, and don’t say a word about this to anyone." (To Bishop) I guess I don’t have to worry about you." Bishop sarcastically smirks. Hiding the polaroid picture under his arm. Bishop grabs Lark who is still spooked as they leave out. CUT TO- Lark enters through her window which she left cracked open. CUT TO- View from the bed room door. Larks mom LIANA is standing in the doorway. LIANA “Where have you been?” LARK “Getting fresh air” (sitting at the edge of her bed) LIANA “You hanging out with that mute boy again?” LARK I thought you liked Bishop Mama LIANA He’s alright I guess, just don’t understand him is all. LARK You don’t have to, he’s not your friend (removing her tennis shoes off of her feet) LIANA . "You right, he's not my friend but you missy are my daughter and I'd appreciate some respect." LARK "Sorry mama" LIANA "Get washed up, we’re having brunch. Your brother will be back from school for the weekend in a hour or so and your father should be on his way home now." LARK (Chuckles) Hmmp (to herself). Larks brother LOURDES enters the apartment with a book bag on one shoulder and his trumpet in the other. His long locks are shifted to one side. His sunglasses resting on the bridge of his nose. LOURDES MA?…LARK?.. (Lourdes makes his way to the kitchen where Liana is helping the day maid set the table.) Liana turns to see Lourdes at the kitchen entrance. LIANA "There you are!..I was beginning to get worried. (steps back) Ayi, are they feeding you there or what? How are you? put your bags in your sisters room. Then bring her back to the table with you, dinner is ready now." CUT TO- Lourdes finds Lark painting on the fire escape. Puts his bags down. Heads to fire escape. LOURDES Now how’d I know you’d be out here LARK ****! Lour you scared me half to death! (Play slapping her brother. Bringing him in for a hug) LOURDES Hey Twin whats doin? LARK Nothing much (Apprehensive)… Whats going on up there at that school? LOURDES You know, same ol’. Trying to come back so I’ve been on my good behavior ****.(removing his shades) LARK Well I hope your learning your lesson. You lucky you not in jail for all the stunts you’ve pulled LOURDES Not sure if Jail would be any worse. But we can talk about that later..Why you seem all shook up? LARK I always hated that telepathic twin mess..can never just keep things to myself huh? LOURDES I don’t know why you would want to keep anything from me. Last I knew, we were thick as thieves. Both are seated on the fire escape, legs dangling below LARK I saw a dead body LOURDES Whats so new about that?…You seen someone get killed or something? LARK No I snuck out with Bishop to get some air and I saw a casket in Iglesia Pentecostal down the block, at first there was no one in there but there was this man .. he was.. just...inside the casket LOURDES And who else?…you said at first.. lark looks at Lourdes intently LARK No one I was just- Lourdes looks back at Lark confused Liana is seen on the other side of the window, standing in Larks room. LIANA "You two kitchen now..your father is home and its time to eat" CUT TO: Horatio eating his food at the dinner table. Lark looks over to him hoping not to make eye contact. HORATIO If you continue to stay out of trouble this can be a permanent thing again… Don’t you want to come back home? LOURDES Not exactly… Why would I want to be back here in this house, where I was exiled? Lark chuckles lightly while masking it with a cough.Liana tears up, leaving the table. LIANA I swear sometimes don't know where I went wrong…(tearing) excuse me (exits) HORATIO You can’t just make your mother happy for one weekend?… LOURDES So its up to me to make mama happy ..I thought that was your job. Horatio gets up from the table. Lordes following his lead. Horatio inching close to Lourdes swiftly greets him face to face. HORATIO You listen to me if you don’t straighten the **** up you will be on thestreet for the rest of your life... You remember who's still keeping you a float... (Horatio pushes past Lourdes. To which laughter erupts Lourdes like a volcano.) LOURDES This is why I can't be here, I don't know how you do it sis (sitting back down) LARK Must you take everything too far? LOURDES (smirk) life is too boring with limits Lark (said with a half serious tone) CUT TO: INT: 12:00 am Bishop is looking through his pictures of the day. Flips through photos of Lark. Comes across photo of the man in the casket. He stares curiously at it. Opens window. He notices Larks light is on.He returns to his bed. Lays on his back his arms resting below his head. 1:00am Lark taps on Bishops window. Bishop gets up slowly and opens the window. LARK I think I’m ready to take on that camera Bishop smiles through his confusion. He helps her in before grabbing his notepad. “Are you ok?” he writes LARK (sitting next to Bishop) No…see Lourdes is in town and in a matter of a few hours hasmanaged to cause so much dysfunction and now he’s out with his buddies from the neighborhood ripping and running the streets like he's has not a care in the world. Its like he wants to be better but is physically incapable of doing so. ..My mom is so sad right now about this...You know, we talk about everything but its like he only talks civilized with me. I wish people knew the real him. BISHOP “Its possible you are the most sensible part of him”. LARK hm, he must think I have enough logic for us both I suppose.. (fixing a strap on her mint green spaghetti top).. whats the most sensible thing to you? Bishop gets up and heads to his dresser. Picking up his camera. He hands it to her. Thank you again everyone. I am excited to see where my imagination takes me. God bless.
