    He has arrived early
Staking his claim to a prime area of the great tree
    More than halfway up
    Close to the trunk

Sitting through the late winter winds
He forms himself into a ball
Dreaming of a time soon to come
When the branches will grow limbs
    When limbs flower with leaves
When this tree will be home
For a family not yet there

At the slightest hint of sunlight
    He swoops downward
Finding material to build his nest
It must be attractive for potential mates
Yet functional for the feeding and training of babies

His nest will be the envy of all others
    It will be sturdy
Strong spring winds shall not move it from its position
Early summer rains will not soak through it

He is the first on the block
First to know where earthworms live
First to know how high cats can jump
First to give squirrels a taste of his sharp beak
    He is building
    Protecting his home
    She will be pleased

    I love this post because
    your song, like that
    of a bird, freely
    sings to me ~
