Critics lean on Holder

Eric Holder's Justice Department is coming under pressure to order sweeping changes to police operations in the United States.

Civil rights and community groups, as well as some lawmakers, are pushing the attorney general to take action to address racial and social problems that, they say, were exposed by the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.

“We’re at our zero moment as a nation,” said Maya Rockeymoore, president and CEO of the Center for Global Policy Solutions, a community-empowerment group. “If we continue to let this go unaddressed, we’re going to have Fergusons springing up all across the country.”

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon on Wednesday appointed a new state public safety director, giving his administration its only black Cabinet member nearly three weeks after the shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer led to violent protests in a St. Louis suburb.

The governor said former St. Louis police chief Daniel Isom II will take over as director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety on Sept. 1. He will replace Jerry Lee, who resigned after almost three years as director.

Missouri police sued for $40 million over actions in Ferguson protests

A group of people caught up in unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, after a white officer killed a black teenager, sued local officials on Thursday, alleging civil rights violations through arrests and police assaults with rubber bullets and tear gas.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, says law enforcement met a broad public outcry over the Aug. 9 killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown with "militaristic displays of force and weaponry," (and) engaged U.S. citizens "as if they were war combatants."

Hillary Clinton has broken her silence on Ferguson.

Speaking at a technology conference in San Francisco Thursday morning, Clinton addressed the death of Michael Brown, nearly three weeks after the unarmed teenager was shot to death by police officer Darren Wilson in the St. Louis, Missouri, suburb.

"This summer, the eyes of our country and indeed of the world have been focused on one community in the middle of the American heartland: Ferguson, Missouri," Clinton said. "Watching the recent funeral for Michael Brown, as a mother, as a human being, my heart just broke for his family because losing a child is every parent's greatest fear and an unimaginable loss."

(Reuters) - A police officer has resigned after pointing a rifle at protesters during racially charged demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri, and another has been fired for inappropriate social media posts stemming from the two weeks of civil unrest, officials said on Friday.

Violent protests erupted in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson after white police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed black 18-year-old Michael Brown on Aug. 9, drawing global attention to the state of race relations in the United States.
