St. Louis journalist reportedly fired after Facebook post on Michael Brown's mom

A St. Louis journalist has reportedly been fired after making offensive Facebook comments about the mother of Michael Brown, the teenager whose shooting death ignited weeks of emotional protests in Missouri and led, eventually, to the birth of the nationwide Black Lives Matter movement.

Bobby Hughes was an overnight photographer and journalist at KTVI, the Fox affiliate in St. Louis, according to reports ...

Former prosecutor turned state rep takes St. Louis circuit attorney primary

ST. LOUIS • State Rep. Kimberly Gardner got her birthday wish.

Gardner, who turned 41 on Tuesday, soundly defeated three other Democrats vying for the nomination to become the city’s next top prosecutor.

Tuesday’s four-way primary for St. Louis prosecutor was perhaps the biggest local election, marking the first time since 2000 a new face will lead an office of more than 60 prosecutors since Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce announced she would not seek a fifth term ...

 ... but this is really funny, Nixon has cut the budget.

Public defenders in Missouri are so overworked, they assigned the governor a case

The lead public defender in Missouri has the right to assign any lawyer in the state to represent a poor client in need of legal defense in court.

And with a caseload too big for the full-time public defenders to keep up with, Michael Barrett found just the one: Jay Nixon, Missouri’s Democratic governor, who has continually cut the budget for the department ...

So he assigned Nixon a case.

2 year anniversary of Michael's death.

"This was the new Jim Crow": an oral history of the Ferguson protests

On August 9, 2014, two years ago, Darren Wilson, a white police officer, shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man, in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown's body lay on Canfield Drive in the small St. Louis suburb for nearly five hours, as crowds grew and anger magnified.

Some locals, like Ferguson City Council member Mark Byrne, say that the ensuing protests — which would spark a painful and ongoing national conversation about police violence and the value of black lives in America — were unexpected in Ferguson.

"We didn't have the racial issues," Byrne told Vox, "and there wasn't racial tension" ...

Two St. Louis officers must pay $600,000 to man for excessive force in arrest

A jury in federal court in St. Louis earlier this month ordered two St. Louis police officers to pay $600,000 for using excessive force in arresting a man in March 2013.

In a lawsuit filed in 2014, Calvin Fletcher, now 39, alleged that the two St. Louis officers were among four police officers who targeted him for a false arrest because he is black, then repeatedly shocked him with a Taser and beat him, breaking bones in his face and damaging a kidney ...

Filling Police Vacancies Is Latest Struggle for Ferguson

Two years after Michael Brown's shooting death put a national spotlight on Ferguson police, the suburban St. Louis city is struggling to maintain the number of officers it needs.

The department is facing 13 vacancies. It's down to a staff of 36 compared to 55 in 2014. Some officers have retired, while others who spent months dealing with protests and heavy scrutiny left for different jobs.

"Some just got fed up with police work," Mayor James Knowles III said Wednesday ...
