Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the practice of removing or cutting the genitalia for non-medical reasons. The practice of genital mutilation is abundant in over a dozen countries in Africa, with Ethiopia, Egypt, and Nigeria being the top three countries having the highest percentage of girls and women experiencing genital mutilation.
Now, Nigeria is doing the right thing by banning the act of genital mutilation. The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 was passed in the senate on May 5, and outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan enacted a ban on genital mutilation before he passed the torch to his successor, Muhammadu Buhari, on May 29, according to a report by Nigeria A Plus.

Skin Bleaching should also be banned.

Ivory Coast has banned skin-whitening creams, which are widely used in west Africa, because of fears they cause lasting damage to health, the health ministry said Wednesday.

“Cosmetic lightening and hygiene creams ... that depigment the skin ... are now forbidden,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ban affects whitening creams and lotions containing mercury and its derivatives, cortisone, vitamin A or more than two percent hydroquinine, a lightening agent that is used to develop photographs.

Last month, Jaha Dukureh held the hand of a pregnant 17-year-old girl as she went through a particularly painful experience in the delivery room. Dukureh supported the girl after she fled an arranged marriage.

“I was looking at the doctors just because they are looking at her, they know something happened to her, but they didn’t say anything about it.”
