After spending years spying upon and attempting to disrupt the life of civil rights legend Martin Luther King, Jr., files released late last week reveal that the FBI apparently instituted similar practices against his wife Coretta Scott King shortly after King was assassinated in 1968.
FBI's spying on Coretta King (who died in January 2006) included secretly listening in on telephone calls, following her travels and opening her mail.
One of the released files reveals an FBI agent accusing Mrs. King of having a public persona of being "selfless, magnanimous and decorous" but was actually engaged in "shrewd, calculating, businesslike activities."
