This is a song from Fantasia's Album, "Free Yourself":

    [chorus]
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
This goes out to all my baby mamas
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
I got love for all my baby mamas

It's about time we had our own song
Don't know what took so long
Cause nowadays it's like a badge of honor
    To be a baby mama
I see ya payin' ya bills
I see ya workin' ya job
I see ya goin' to school
And girl I know it's hard
And even though ya fed up
    With makin' beds up
    Girl, keep ya head up
    All my

    [chorus]
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
This goes out to all my baby mamas
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
I got love for all my baby mamas

I see you get that support check in the mail
You open it and you'er like, "What the Hell"
You say, "This ain't even half of daycare"
Sayin' to yourself, "This here ain't fair"
And all my girls who don't get no help
Who gotta do everything by yourself
Remember, what don't kill you can only make you stronger
    My baby mama

    [chorus]
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
This goes out to all my baby mamas
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
I got love for all my baby mamas

Cause we the backbone (of the hood)
I always knew that (that we could)
We can go anywhere, we can do anything
I know we can make it if we dream
And I think it should be a holiday
For single mothers, tryin' to make a way
But until then, here is your song
    Show love to my....

    [chorus]
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
This goes out to all my baby mamas
    B-A-B-Y M-A-M-A
This goes out to all my baby mamas
I got love for all my baby mamas

Family what do you think about this song? Is it a "badge of honor" to be a baby mama? Is it glorifying what in my mind is one of the biggest problems facing our community (black children growing up without the benefit of 2 parents)? Or is this much needed encouragement for single mothers? Let's discuss!

I agree with your sentiments about the struggle of black children not having 2 parents in the home. I do feel that single mothers who are working hard to take care of their children deserve some credit. Personally, I would have said something a lot deeper than "Baby Mamas", but I understand what she was trying to do.

I for one hate the term Baby Mama, it is degrading! However while I support encouraging women who may be struggling and hurting...I fear calling single parenthood a "badge of honor" is glorifying something that shouldn't be glorified.

    Well

I believe strongly in having BOTH parents in the home raising their family. I have no doubt that this what God intended. The truth is there are too many single parent homes in our communities these days. I don't know any women who intentionally set out to become single parents. I can witness that certain situations arise and the only choice is to take on ALL the responsibilities that come with rasing children alone. I myself for the past 3 1/2 years was forced into single parenthood. Yes I say forced because it was NOT my choice to struggle with my children alone. I could have stayed with my husband who had begun to deal in drugs and began to drink heavily, who became abusive physically and verbally, but I could not allow my children to see me in that situation. I could not allow my children to grow up seeing their mother abused. I think that's where many abused women mess up. They stay in a unhealthy relationship and the children grow up seeing this thinking that getting hit, beat and cursed is the "norm". I refused to go down that way. Although single parent homes are at an all time high, there are many single women and men raising families singled handedly and doing a wonderful job. This country recognizes the accomplishments of many people, but what about us single mothers who feed, clothe, provide and educate and try to train our children to be productive citizens...who work hard everyday who barley have have two nickles to rub together after the bills are paid????
I think the song is a wonderful tribute to women who make miricles happen everyday. Whodini aint got jack on ME! Society may down us but I feel God has our reward ready and waiting for when we get there. I guess to finally answer the question, no I guess I'm not offended by the term baby mama because there are worse things I could be referred to. I know the things that I have accomplished with the help of God, and I thank those who have extended a helping hand for this is what single parents need...New York has a statue of liberty...on day I hope to have a statue of ME.

Oh and by the way, I am a single mother of 4 who just got married on November 23 2004. I fell into the myth that men don't want women with children, but if you know the greatness that God has created and placed in you and if you know that prayer can certainly change things God can change your single situation to a tag team duo...lol

    Peace and Blessings

    Badge of Honor?

After reading the lyrics of this song I feel that Cheryl Pepsii Riley's late 80's song "Thanks for my child" is a better song to highlight the positive side of a tough situation. I think Fanastia could have chosen a better term to show the positive side female single parenthood. To say being an unwed mother is a "badge of honor" makes it sound like young ladies should and are volunteering for this prestigeous and honored tradition (not). I think she was trying to encourage unwed mothers not to give up on their dreams though the route to success may be a little longer now.

    Peace

Even though I understand what she was trying to put across in this song (and I like it), I think SHE should understand that she's only giving ammo to those who want to make knee-jerk judgements about our culture by releasing it.

If I remember correctly Fantasia once stated in an interview that before she entered "American Idol", she did nothing but stay at home. She never had a job, and was presumably on welfare. This type of existance is a "badge of honor"? I don't think so! Again I support single mothers who are not receiving the support they should from the fathers of their children. However I strongly frown on single parenthood being promoted as a positive in our community.
