I see your face on my t.v. screen
    looking straight through me..

    It's 6:30 , I'm sittin' on the couch
    eating supper, feeding my face..

I don't want to look at you
but I find myself drawn towards your image
like a moth to a flame..

    Reluctantly I look, slowly
    not focusing on your face
for I know what I will see..

    Two soulful little eyes
    an innocent face, curly hair
    hand me down clothes
    if you're lucky..

    Pearly white teeth
    you're smiling
    standing there
sun shining on your black skin..

    African baby...african child

Suddenly my food tastes like sawdust
    and I'm having trouble swallowing
there's a lump in my throat
my heart gets heavy, my tears fall..

If I could, I would reach
through the glass and pick you up
hug you, love you, look after you
    but I can't..

    and they say
    just 30 dollars a month
can save the life of a child..

And I want to scream at the world..

    Is your beautiful little soul
    worth only 30 dollars..
    My heart screams...NO
    you have no value..

    You are precious, priceless
    and I am hopeless, helpless..

    And another little face
    disappears from my t.v.screen
but stays forever etched in my mind...

    you are inspiring, you know???

i share in heart with you this piece. People deserve MUCH better than to starve to death and be deprived of the fulness of life..

Rich...as always thanx for the support..and ditto...how can you say a child's life is worth any amount...sometimes seeing this on t.v makes me just wanna hide away from the world because I can't change it....your comments are truly appreciated...

MADDRAPPER..thank you for your words...and I agree..these little babies and children are put on display in their misery and it's so unfair to know that we can't help enough to save them..knowing that most of the money disappears en route to their hungry mouths....

j'hiah...thank you for the read and the words....and yes they do...but doesn't it always seems so much more heartbreaking when the sufferer is an innocent child...

    sadly sad too see

how can i watch as children be displayed
on T.V. out of suffering .........as ads ask
for cash to feed them ......if only i could feed
them and cloth them but all i can do is watch
and it hurts..........i wonder how long :(

I loved the way you brought this piece poet...you served us a precious part of your soul on a silver dinner platter...and what does it really matter what sawdust tastes like...your entre was ooooo sooooooo delicately bold...almost too beautiful to eat...but we swallowed the reality anyway...every mouthful was seasoned befitting every verse...every marinated line

A most unique scribe poet...I can't thank-you enough...for sharing your evening supper with me

    *see*

Your gifts are extraordinary, my sister! I followed each verse and felt the familiar discomfort of my excesses while watching those same little eyes woo me into their world of poverty beyond my imagination....a stare I can never meet for long...a gaze that pricks my conscience and pierces my heart.

There is no price we can place on the precious lives of these little ones...your piece reminds me of a verse in an old song, "Nothing Rhymed"....

"If I drink my champagne and my sherry
...eating more than enough apple pie
will I glance at my screen
    and see real human beings
starve to death right in front of my eyes?"

Thank you for making me take another look.

Hunter...thank you for appreciating this piece so much....I've done this a thousand times...sat in front of the t.v..and felt like crying...sometimes life is just so unfair....

a..thank you as always...and the verse you quoted says it all..sometimes it is hard to watch and I mute the t.v or walk out...I have the unrealistic and unattainable wish that no child shall suffer...I wish it could come true...

G-Man...simply, I say thank you...your comment went straight to my heart...
