    A man of diverse talent
not seen in many, many years
on tv and in the movies
    "Finally making it"
    while justifying my fears

    He's a modern day reminder
    Visions of the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's
    Stephin Fetchit
    Eddie "Rochester" Anderson
    Mantan Moreland
    Amos and Andy
    just to name a few
    Hollywood's presentation
    of me and you

    Bug-eyed and stupid
    shiftless and shady
    bown' and grinin'
    ignorant and lazy
    walking sight gags
    funny
    ****** acting like ******
    white folks just love it

    Those brothers had no choice
that's who Hollywood said we were
    now fifty years later
    there's Cedric and Bernie
    Lawrence and Chris
    carrying the torch
    of satorical ***** bliss

people like MLK and Rosa Parks
    being made fun of
    their legacy laughed at
their life and work was no joke
    joke
    is that what we are?
    a joke

The Entertainer says "I'm just acting"
    yes he is
    acting like a fool
    fame and fortune
    the price to pay
for Cedric and others like him
    1930, just like today

Stand next to the Harlem Globetrotters
    and other cheezin' stereotypes
    minstrels
    bringing us shame
    2002
our image is still the same
    don't you understand
    it's what our children see
    here's a name I say with pride
    another funny man
    Bill Cosby

WF7 I did see those movies and I think there is a distinct difference in the characters, especially considering the evolution of blacks in films from the 30's to the 70's when Cosby was in those films you mentioned. Thanks for your thoughtful response.

she did much more than that my brother. Sister Parks was down with a group of black citizens (FBI says group had communist ties) who did much to promote the cause of civil rights in Montgomery Everything from voter registration to making Montgomery comply with school de-seg regulations. The communist thing has kept her true story from being told.

one mo thing. She could have been killed for just "sitting down"...beaten to death right there on the bus and those who did it would have walked. A very brave and courageous move indeed.

    It's important

to understand the importance of our struggle as a people. We must not compromise...all in the name of a box office hit. We also must recognize where we are in history, and realize we can't afford to take any steps backwards. There is comedy, and then there is bufoonery. African Americans have the ability to present great comedy that sells...

I haven't seen this flick... and I intend to...

But let me say that we must never minimize, until we have researched the facts for ourselves, what the struggle was about.
Somehow I'm getting confirmation we still have a long road ahead.

peace and thank you for the opportunity Brotha BE. :)
