    Ephraim

It had been 28 hours, 50 minutes, and
    1000 seconds Since Ephraim's death.
The apartment was filled with mourners
Mirrors had been covered, Clothing had
been torn, Kaddish had been recited his
body returned to the earth; and his soul
returned to G-D. Shiva had begun.

His mother sat on a borrowed cold stone
bench, her spirit broken eyes hollow and
empty. She had survived a cursed and
shame-filled world. Reared by a crazy
father, himself a product of places we
now call camps. She married the first
man to look her way. How was she to
know his bones and breath would soon
reek of booze and whores? Yet she
survived it all, not for herself but for her
son. Only to be rendered incapable of
saving her only child from three little
    letters.

    I scampered around the apartment
ensuring that the kosher food and People
did not mix with the Circuit Queens. I
tried to remain stoic like Rachael, Ruth,
Rebecca, Easter, Sarah & Naomi. But
I was a Gentile a Queer one at that.

I observed a women in a high quality
    Hermes knock-off scarf, ask another
"who is the colored boy?" The women
    replied "African-American, the term is
    African-American Sylvia and he is
    was Ephriam’s_______ "Special Friend".
"What's a Special Friend” replied the
women I now knew as Sylvia”. “O
Sylvia you really need to get cable”
replied the other. I attempted to chuckle
but nothing came save for tears.

I went into the bedroom sat on the bed
and continued to weep-muffled at first
more of a whimper. Then louder. and
louder, I bit the pillow to quiet my pain-
Remember this was a Jewish House of
    mourning. Not testimony Sunday at
New Cannon Baptist Church. As the
taste of down filled my mouth Rivers of
pain flowed into my pillow. I was 27
    and already a widow.

My hands began to tremble I clenched
my fists and steadied my body for what I
thought was to become a guttural wail, a
wail grounded in the hulls of African
slave ships a wail much like that of the
Mary’s & Martha at the Crucifixion.
Instead I could only produce more tears.
Fatigue had set in; my wailing would
have to wait for another day.

Ephraim's mother entered the room. She
parked next to me & tenderly caressed
my hand. Her eyes now glazed and
shuttered. Her voice trembled as she
whispered "You were his Bashert” I
gulped “And he my Christ Bridegroom.”
    I replied.

We embraced wiped our tears, cloaked
our pain and returned to our guests.
Forever to be linked in pain and hope.
Pain of a mother burying her child. Pain
of a lover being widowed at 27. And
hope hope that Sylvia gets cable.
