Electoral College 2016: Everything you need to know before December 19, and after ...

Millions of voters will head to the polls next Tuesday to cast ballots in the 2016 presidential election (and some already have), but the outcome won’t be official for another two months, in January. That’s because the presidential election is decided by the Electoral College, and not the national popular vote.

It’s a process that was established by the Constitution that says a candidate can only be elected president if he or she wins a majority of the 538 electors. Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, therefore, must secure at least 270 electoral votes to win the White House ...

    Who are the electors?

Some of the other Democratic electors this cycle include Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, in Florida; Christine Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, in California; and former Rep. Gabby Giffords in Arizona ...

To: Loyal Viewers of the Cross Thread,

Many do not understand the term Electoral College, its origin nor its power in determining the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates over the Popular Vote in the national election. This will set out, for once and for all, what exactly happens in the outcome of the national election through indirect means ...

Why does the U.S. have an Electoral College?

Q: Why does the United States have an Electoral College when it would be so easy to directly elect a president, as we do for all the other political offices?

A: When U.S. citizens go to the polls to “elect” a president, they are in fact voting for a particular slate of electors. In every state but Maine and Nebraska, the candidate who wins the most votes (that is, a plurality) in the state receives all of the state’s electoral votes. The number of electors in each state is the sum of its U.S. senators and its U.S. representatives. (The District of Columbia has three electoral votes, which is the number of senators and representatives it would have if it were permitted representation in Congress.) The electors meet in their respective states 41 days after the popular election. There, they cast a ballot for president and a second for vice president. A candidate must receive a majority of electoral votes to be elected president ...

The one scenario that could still get Hillary into the White House

a surprise twist in the Electoral College.

Though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 200,000, Trump has won the minimum of 270 electoral votes necessary to be elected president. As of late Wednesday, he had 290 to Clinton’s 228.

According to the Constitution, chosen electors of the Electoral College are the real people who will vote for president, when they meet on Dec. 19 in their respective state capitals ...

500,000 People Sign Petition Asking Electoral College to Pick Clinton as President Instead of Trump

... The Electoral College – which was first introduced in 1804 – is comprised of 538 electors. Each state’s number of electors is decided by its number of members in Congress, which is dependent on the state’s population. So, when American citizens cast their ballots, they aren’t directly voting for president – they’re voting for electors. This year, Trump took 279, to Clinton’s 228 ...

Without Electoral College, we'd live in real-life 'Hunger Games'

... Is this really fair? Or is it some dusty trick from some faded document, allowing the elites to enforce their will upon us again and again?

With Clinton losing the electoral vote and winning the popular vote, as did her fellow Democrat Al Gore a few years ago, many Americans are offering reasons why we should just throw the Electoral College in the garbage and let the popular vote prevail ...

Hillary Clinton's popular vote lead raises questions about the Electoral College

... Progressive website MoveOn.org has a petition to end it, and even the president-elect himself has railed against it in the past. Trump has reportedly deleted tweets he posted in 2012 in which he wrote, “The phoney electoral college made a laughing stock out of our nation. The loser one!” He also tweeted, “He lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country!” In fact, Mr. Obama won the popular vote in 2012 and 2008 by several million votes ...
