DOWN THE BLOCK AND AROUND THE WORLD

I may not have silky fine hair or baby soft skin
I’m not transparently light or paper-thin
My beauty lies within

I’m not a pre-Madonna or a ghetto queen
I’m right in between caviar and Afro sheen
Don Perignon or a cool 40 of MGD
That’s the beauty in me

Prefer satin sheets
But I’ll settle for cotton
House on a hill or a one-room cot
The diversity in me is never forgotten.

Traveled first class to France
Rode the bus to Alabama for a civil rights protest

I’ve gone hungry some nights
Now servants stand to the left and serve on the right
Waiting for my appetite to arise

I’ve searched the truth from America
I grew roots when Sojourner Truth answered me

I’ve reached the peak of peace
Found the knowledge to acknowledge me
Experienced life day by day
Found my role in society
Strong and secure and loving everything about me
