http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20050917171609990003&ncid=NWS00010000000001 NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 17) - Day after day, for more than two weeks, the 76-year-old man sat trapped and alone in his attic, sipping from a dwindling supply of water until it ran out. No food. No way out of a house ringed by foul floodwaters.

Without ever leaving home, Gerald Martin lived out one of the most remarkable survival stories of Hurricane Katrina. Rescuers who found him Friday, as they searched his neighborhood by boat, were astounded at his good spirits and resiliency after 18 days without food or human contact.

"It's an incredible story of survival," said Louie Fernandez, spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency search unit that carried out the rescue.

In recent days, search crews have been finding corpses by the dozens in the still-flooded neighborhoods of New Orleans, but not trapped survivors. The FEMA search-and-rescue boat navigating through the Eighth Ward didn't expect to find anyone alive at 6010 Painters St., but they planned to search the premises of a one-story wood house.

As the motor idled and the boat glided forward, they heard a voice.

    "Hey, over here."

Using a sledgehammer, a FEMA rescuer broke down the front door and went inside with another team member, struggling through a living room jumbled with overturned, sodden furniture.

This in the words of our "first lady" is "disgusting"!

remarkable survival story indeed....God is good. Bush may not care about black folks, but i don't see where this statement or story would come in. He was not the only one who stayed back and he just wanted to attend church services. No matter the storm he still praised his God.

It is easy to place the blame but unless we go through what these ppl went through we can't lay a blame on no one...nor can we actually blame Bush as much as I would like....BUt how could we blame him in this case he was not the only person who stayed nor the only man to rescue.

My cousin was in the water for 2 days, he is now covered with rashes and sores...he don't blame Bush he blames his self for not leaving when he should...but by them always having serve storms as they do, he thought like many it would be ok once the storm passes....

No state is prepared for something like this....
    well this .... IMHO

    Peace
    Angel

    Hi, Sistawoman, How're you doing?!

I agree with you on 98% of what you've written here... Yes, we must accept part of the blame for our being left behind to be "rescued" by anyone but ourselves... Personal responsibility, the desire for self-preservation, and just scrapping one's logic, and listening to one's inner voice, that gut feeling called intuition... It saved more of us than did our own "wisdom."

This elder is the personification of amazing grace, nod doubt! He was so doggoned cool and collected he even asked one of his rescuers to stop by Taco Bell, or something, so he could get a bite to eat(smile!) But he took his life into his own hands when he did not allow his inner-voice to deliver him from danger... GOD is not that church building... GOD is US, in US, of US< NOT BUSH, not FEMA...

The 2% disagreement is that this baby was computer simulated with "hurrican Pam", in 2004, and predicted more than 5 years ago - before 9/11... New Orleans, and New York, were seen as 2 of 3 locations in this country where a natual or other disaster would cause NATIONAL SECURITY risks to this country...

The New Orleans Times-Picayune wrote a 5-part story on the problems with the LEVEE protection for a category 4 or 5 hurricane in 2002! DUBYA showed his love by completely dismantling FEMA, and putting a Horse Show enthusiast at the head, and by denying the city needed funds for shoring up those stupid levees(shouldn't a been built in the first place!)...

Now he wants to do the Eminent Domain thang, and claim the land for his casinos... That's not love, but what more could we possibly expect from this guy???(smile!) What's more troubling to me is that every time I see this animal, he's got T.D FAKES(oh, I meant, JAKES) standing next to him, giving him political cover... If I were African Women, I'd be mighty afraid of a Reverend who freaks another woman's man like dat...(heheheh)

    Peace!
    Zeke
