At one time one had a choice of about 8 major search engines, but recently it is down , pretty much to two, and out of the 2, one with a G in it's name ,
seems to be no longer.....of any service, after it's new format,
for real research, in fact it spits out a short list of what it wants to give you rather then what you ask for.

Palin wanted to ban books and close libraries, has she now made steps to abolish net neutrality by doing a Farenheight 451 with search engines, so that they are no longer viable for cogent research?

There are plenty of search engines out there still.

Some of them are even doing interesting things with natural language processing (Wolfram Alpha is a great example, but technically considered an answer engine).

No one is abolishing search engines, there's a lot of reasons why some of them are no longer with us -- the dotcom bubble bursting is one of the main reasons.

OK so since the one starting with a Y is worthless and the one starting with a G

is now a piece of garbage after its...renovation, can you list some of the better ones?

You need to know what trigger words to type into the search box. It's all about how you word what you are searching for. What I usually do is type the word "forum" after the sentence or phrase I type into the search box, you will be surprised at how much you will find.

Google is probably the best one out so far. Bing isn't too bad. Ask.com is still usable. Kosmix makes a little portal out of search terms and scrapes content from pre-defined usual locations.

If you get the chance, play around with Wolfram Alpha, as well. It's fun to ask it questions.

As Bxblasta said above, you can go a long way with optimizing queries with Google or any search engine for that matter.

So you have seen no decline in the services provided by google, after the new format?

In researching black history and contemporary African politics?

And I doubt anyone would want their son in high school or dhaughter in college to do a report or a term paper based on forum posts.

Wait a minute, lol...some good stuff can be found under forums, especially Destee.com, right? We do scholarly work here, along with research like any where else:)

If you're referring to the live updating and previewing, I haven't had any problems with it.

I miss the old simpler google search landing page, but the changes haven't done anything to indexed content.
