Does Malcolm X Deserve A Federal Holiday?

Does Malcolm X deserve a federal holiday? Toure, a New York Times best-selling author, thinks so. He penned a Time Magazine column arguing that the civil rights legend is equally deserving of a federal holiday as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"We would celebrate not just his willingness to journey but also his journey itself, which concludes with militancy being defeated by humanism and with racial hatred being defeated by globalism and multiracial acceptance."

We Need A Malcolm X Day

Every Martin Luther King day I swell with pride as we celebrate an extraordinary black American and remember King’s magnanimous ideals. But I also hear a voice in my mind saying, “I wonder if there’ll ever be a holiday celebrating another black American?” Is there just one black American who merits a holiday?

... To say the least, lol, good point ABSiblings. If this becomes a movement, I'll be supporting it; for sure.

I don't know. The author you cited seems confused on Malcolm's legacy:

"We would celebrate not just his willingness to journey but also his journey itself, which concludes with militancy being defeated by humanism and with racial hatred being defeated by globalism and multiracial acceptance."

Militancy? Humanism? Racial Hatred? Globalism? Multiracial Acceptance? It's all in his head.

Malcolm X was assassinated while pursuing the OAAU. I'd hate for his legacy to be transformed into this Liberal dream.

Besides, we live with Malcolm (and others) in mind daily.

No. It wont be made a holiday because he means nothing to them. King meant something to them. Plus, there was a lot more white guilt. They could easily tear his vitriol for the white race apart. It would be easier to get Geronimo a national holiday.

We touch and agree on Malcolm's efforts not becoming a liberal dream; but most of Toure's thoughts you quoted, are taken largely from the OAAU's tennant, as seen here:

Take another look at these words:

...but also his journey itself, which concludes with militancy being defeated by humanism and with racial hatred being defeated by globalism and multiracial acceptance...

I think you'll be able to follow the logic.

I think he should be honored this for all he did for our today and tomorrow
and we could in the future honor him by giving him once again his brightest
day on that final hour ....yes they should make his birthday an hoilday

I agree this would be an movement in his honor that get my total full support

Its more to do with what $$RICH$$ says, having to do with giving him honor... we know it'll never happen for the reasons you've stated; and if it does, it'll be as ABSiblings has said, a "strange thing" happening:)
