We’ve been through
Discriminating dissention
Between light-skinned
And dark-skinned
Descendents
Of
Our
Afro-centric family
While trying to determine
Who WE wanna be

Hmmm

I’ve seen the Field *******
Open up a can of
Whup-***
On the house *******
While trying to figure out
Who’s the
H.N.I.C

Nobody even asked me

We went from
“Blow-outs”
To afro-perms
And scary curls
And…while waves
Allowed all to do their thang
Fades were always in

There were
Dark-skinned lovelies
And
Butter-pecan honies
And
Red bone hotties
And
Ebony-hued sweeties
And
I have always loved you

ALL OF YOU

Coz you’re my family tree
The deep, enormous roots of me
…Will always take care of me
Through thick and thin
Any crisis I’m in
You’re there for me
Ebony
Deep chocolate
And
Vanilla-free

It’s all the same to me

I love the hue of you
The subtle hint of nature’s dew

I love the sway of your swerve
The hard body and steel nerves
That comes with the
Cool and confident
Coz heaven-sent
Was first applied to
YOU
