Proponents of the death penalty believe that it deters crime and is economically more efficient than life imprisonment . They also believe that "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" honors the victim and consoles the grieving families knowing that the perpetrator will never be able to commit the heinous act again.
Opponents of the death penalty argue that it does not deter crime, and unjustifiably gives the government the power to take human life. It also perpetuates racism by disproportionally targeting people of color, who cannot afford good attorneys. They also believe that life sentences are more severe and less expensive than death sentences.
