Does signing up for Selective Service mean that when America is at war you can be selected to serve in the armed forces? If it does, would you join the armed forces if you are selected to serve? What do you think of the practice of making people sign up for Selective Service if they need money to attend college?

    Peace & Love,
    Bro. Ictoan

There will not be a draft due to the established branch numbers... so its really antiquated.

Its one of those programs they should really do away with.. you should only join at this point of your own volition.

The military provides money for college. You don't need a loan

That depends... unless you are placed in certain programs, that GI Bill won't fully cover the cost of a 4 year university...

The military gives money for enlisting. The G.I. bill only applies to war times

Incorrect. .. all honorable discharged vets get the GI bill regardless of war status. Based on contractual years in service

What you are speaking of is an enlistment bonus and that pertains to the job which you pick (how it is for the Army, can't speak for the others) that is barely enough to pay for a semester

They will pay your full ride if you are medically discharged at a percentage of 30% or better under vocational rehabilitation. ..

You can use the GI bill for apprenticeship programs..

    But thats about it though.

Since it's obvious you are not now, nor have ever been in the military, we will agree to disagree and end this

    Incorrect sir
    I was in the army
    Desert storm vet
Went while in the service... didn't pay for the ride, it was discounted but able to CLEP
    Got out with a medical
Used gi bill first... more of a living wage
Went to voc rehab... they paid for ride.

If you are still in or got out... you should go to VA with your dd214 get setup your benefits... because all of that is within your contractual benefits based on your entry and ETS time

But let me further help you

    So was I

The G.I. bill applied only to those that served during times of war. That is still the law. However, if you served during peace time, you got cash for school. Now, ask me how I know that, especially during THAT time?!!?

I did not take the G I Bill I used tuition assistance while I was in the navy, that paid 75% of my tuition. I used The Pell grant, SEOG, and grant in aid to pay the rest which in turn put a couple of grand in my pocket each semester. Now that I am out I get veterans benefits that equal about 70% of tuition.
