This man was so wealthy that during his trip to Hajj, he had an entourage of over 70,000 people. He had so much gold and dispensed so much during his trip, that gold was devalued for the next 10 to 20 years throughout the region.
He even borrowed gold back at high interest rates in order to stabilize the markets.
This is the only instance in history where one man controlled the price of gold in the Mediterranean.
He is also responsible for indirectly supplying financial support for the Italian renaissance.
