Mugabe: Heed Pope's Peace Message...

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, a former guerrilla fighter accused of using political violence in the past to cling to power, said on Sunday the world's big nations should heed the Pope's lessons in peace. "Our big nations should heed his lessons in regard to peace," Mugabe said in comments about Pope John Paul II, who died on Saturday at the age of 84.

"Small nations would want to feel that they are secure and that they are not in fear of...being attacked by the bullies of this world. Just as has happened in Iraq. This is a fear of small nations like our own," Mugabe said in a televised interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

Mugabe has frequently accused western powers of trying to undermine him for his forcible seizure of white-owned farms for redistribution to landless blacks. Mugabe's ZANU-PF party widened its parliamentary majority in elections on Thursday which were endorsed by African observers but dismissed as a "sham" by the opposition and western governments.

Jesuit-trained Mugabe, who at 81 has been in power since Zimbabwe's independence from Britain in 1980, described the late Pope as a man of virtue. "The Pope was a very virtuous man and a virtuous leader of the Catholic Church. We do hope that all that he has preached about and tried to teach the rest of the world will continue to be heeded by communities throughout the world," Mugabe said.

4. MDC reveals more vote rigging evidence
Date: 7-Apr, 2005
Harare – Zimbabwe’s opposition MDC, has again revealed what it calls ‘more evidence’ to prove that President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party fraudulently won last week’s parliamentary election.
....Police and Zanu-PF polling agents were counting votes in polling stations and communicating results to regional centres, and presiding officers confiscated notes from MDC polling agents and independent observers, it said.

"....how can it be that a person of Mbeki’s stature,
with access to all the information at his disposal,
can be so woefully ignorant of the facts ?...."

Mugabe took a "legitimate" case of Land distribution
(which by the way would probably never have done if
not for the pressure from the disenfranchized war
veterans), and he used that case to justify "evrything
else" including turning the country into a police
state.
The first thing I must say is that I support Mugabe in
taking back the land and being generally anti-West,
but I "hate" how he has manipulated the country and
the whole Southern Afr region as well as the Pan Afr.
family to think it all about "the land" and "the
West",
I wish it was, but no, it also about partisan
politics, he silences anyone who opposses as a
"western puppet", no wonder why Mbeki and SAADC cant
criticize him and his now brutal rule over Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe's neighbours endorse Mugabe

Today the reason why its difficult to find
independepant media reporting objectively or
critically on the Election rigging is because Mugabe
literally destroyed all free press, all Zimbabwean
free press in operating from outside the country thats
one reason why all Zimbabwean critical media seem to
be UK based, the fact is not about "Tony Blair"
sponsership but its about the law called "AIPA" which
forced all Zim media to operate from outside ,
except for 2 newspapers govt owned-"The Herald and The
Chronicle"

Zimbabwe Election Won by Mugabe Party

Posted: 04/02
From: Mathaba

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's party has won a parliamentary majority in the elections. Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) won 62 of Parliament's 120 elected seats, compared to 35 for the British-sponsored opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). One seat went to an independent candidate, according to results announced by the national election commission.

The Anglo-Americans have waged a propaganda campaign against Mugabe, claiming the elections were not free and fair. This came after Mugabe criticized the U.S. and British elections as fraught with fraud and irregularities, and called for an African Union (AU) monitoring of the elections in the United States.

Zimbabwe its held sixth parliamentary election Thursday. Though five political parties contested the poll, it is largely seen as a two-horse race between ZANU-PF, which helped bring Zimbabwe to freedom from British colonial rule and white minority dictatorship under Ian Smith, and the MDC, which is favored by Britain's Tony Blair, who launched a crusade against ZANU-PF's redistribution of land stolen by the whites.

ZANU-PF has been ruling party since Zimbabwe attained political independence on April 18, 1980 from former colonial ruler Britain. However, in the last parliamentary election held in 2000, the party got a smaller majority with 62 seats. The MDC, a party launched just one year before that election, won 57 seats, after receiving much funding and support from Britain.

Zimbabwe's parliament (also called House of Assembly) has 150 members: 120 elected for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies, and 30 appointed members by the president, governors and elected chiefs.
