Wake up and wipe the sleep from your eyes

You’ve been napping for a minute now in
    your own mind

Dreaming…as did the prophet Martin Luther King

Dreaming of a world where sleep really
rejuvenates the soul without worry that
it’s only awkward sleep at best

In Martin’s time, No-Doze was batons
of, as Malcolm would call them, "white devils"
    just a’knocking your coal-black *** out;
    sometimes for a permanent sleep

Martin tried to sleep and dream peacefully,
yet his sandman was the boogeyman in disguise

You know of him; James Earl Ray…

Shattered Martin’s dreams into a thousand pieces
Had him knocking on heaven’s door early in the
morning; no, you couldn’t call that CP time!

And as Langston asked "What happens to a dream
    deferred?"

Ray answered that through our hastened nightmare

    A black man’s dream deferred is a white man’s
    immortality advanced…or so they thought

Oh yes, Martin had a dream! Actually quite a few…

He dreamt of equality even though 1 + 1 always
equaled 2; tell me where’s the racial synergy or the duality
    of man?

He dreamt of armistice and justice for us when there
was just us at the barter table smoking the peace pipe

He dreamt of a day when all God’s children would live
and play together in some type of real benevolent harmony
But nobody told him THEY played for keeps!

    Hmm…till death do us part?

Social nonviolence is what Martin believed and preached
Yet, he died such a violent death…ironic isn’t it?

    If a peaceful black man can be silenced in America for dreaming;
then what’s the fate of a protesting black man in America?

Someone once said a 20th century lynching was happening
in these Undivided States of America

Well what about 400 plus years of lynching?

Ain’t that damned supply of rope depleted yet?

Every so often, the scales of justice tends to tip in our favor

We’ll lose a few; but we’ll gain quite a lot more if we stay
the course and dream on till that elusive day of overcoming
is upon us…we’re just huddled masses yearning to be free

    Again, I ask…

Dare I dream in this day and age?

You bet your *** I will!

Brother Martin wouldn’t want it any other way!
