Daddy’s Little Girl
I wobbled after him, wherever
he led me as he stretched six feet towards the sky.
One day he straddled his horse
and road off to the moon
when I was three or four—
Can’t remember
how he said goodbye.
Bye bye daddy!
Those years, I grew up tough.
Threw rocks and kicked dirt with the boys.
Kept my training bra straps loosened
and my shoelaces tied tight.
Then, momma taught me how to be
a young lady.
I walked across the stage like a woman and peered
into the audience looking
for his face.
You came!
Telling me to talk into the camera, but I
didn't want to whine about those years without him or
babble about the things we wshould have done.
Just wanted to ride off on that horse.
