    I could go on about
how you're a tough guy in
    classic old school man form
yet with a heart so tender
    underneath it all
but the point here is that you
have always been one of the smartest people around
    knew the answers to everything
have read every book on the shelves of
your den, or should I say library
    our reference manual
    taught bro and I to
look in books for the answers
to just look in books, period
I really owe ya for that one
but the mild stroke you suffered a
    year and a half ago
    has slowed you up mentally
made you a little tired physically and
    the crystal clear sharpness we
    always took for granted has
    dulled, like a polluted stream
I gave you a crossword puzzle book for your
birthday last week so you can keep your mind
    running on the treadmill
but when you called last night to
tell me they'd found prostate cancer yet
it was benign and caught in time you
    repeated some things twice and
asked me what was up with me twice too
and a few other things more than once because
you forgot you'd said them and
I just answered each time like it was the first
that is my new way and
bro says when he goes to
football games with you that he
    holds your hand when the
crowd gets too loud just to
    reassure you
I mean by now I know that
most tough people are frontin so I can
    accept the slow down but
my brilliant father's brain in a partial
    choke hold is a
    shadow on my heart
and I know your parents have to get old but
to you they're always just your parents
yet sometimes you really see them and
oh my god it's like your grandma used to
    look way back when I
can deal but I guess I
can't believe I'm still so surprised

When we love and admire our parents, we want them to stay as we cherish them forever. For them to make a drastic change this way, isn't just life altering for them, but for us. I understand, this was so deeply written and felt.
