James Burns fired one shot that tragically ended the life of 22-year-old Devaris Caine Rogers without any justification at all! Responding to a report of “suspicious activity” in the area on June 22, Burns came along Devaris, who was trying to exit his apartment complex peacefully, according to a statement from the Fulton County DA’s office.
“Upon arrival, Burns attempted to block the path of a 2011 silver Ford Fusion that was leaving the scene,” a statement from the DA’s office explained. “Despite the fact the Ford Fusion made no attempt to strike the officer and Burns was safely standing at the rear of his own patrol vehicle, Burns pulled his service weapon and fired one shot into the passenger side of Rogers’ vehicle. The victim was struck in the head.” So Burns didn’t know who was in the car, and he wasn’t in any danger at all SMH! No real reasoning behind it...just shooting because he could!
In addition to the murder charges, Burns also face charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of violation of oath. And yes, it’s good that these charges have been brought up, but something needs to stick! It’s not right that some of these cops can shoot and kill black people, and then walk away like nothing ever happened. It's sickening!
