This thread was inspired by Kannte's Farrahkhans on manhood thread.

Brothers, Will you put into your own prospective of what defines you as a Black man? Starting with the most important and a brief discription on why you preceive it to be so.

Being a single mother, I have my own conclusions on what qualities best defines a man, but obviously, I am not a man and I would like to hear from my conscious Brothers here at Destee's.

It is no doubt in my mind that the Brothers here got it going on! So come on! Share with the Sisters on what makes you a man and how you know that it constitutes manhood.

i am a man because i will put my woman's needs ahead of my own.
i will put my children's needs ahead of my own.
i will stand and fight for my family, my community and my people.

when i was a boy, i put my own pleasure first.
i became a man when i learned there was something more important than my immediate pleasure.

Brother JamesfromPhilly already touched on one of the most important aspects of being a man: Placing the needs of ones family above your own. A man is going to provide for his family, and not doing anything to harm their stability or well being. He is going to work everyday, pay bills, and show a positive example for his children. The best way to learn how to be a man is to observe one (I learned by watching my father). In the absence of a male in the house, there are big brother programs, and other social programs for positive male interaction. Some of the best lessons in life are taught without words!

I can agree to that. But you know pan, when I registered my son to get a big Brother, the waiting list was so long and the male participation was so limited, that he aged right out of that program without ever geting a big Brother. I got him involed in another program at the church, where kids go once a week to to compete in the sports for that season. It is a good outlet for him but the downfall of that is the limited interaction.

Thank you Brother for your response! Perhaps I should look and see what other inexpensive programs they have in my community.

learning and knowledge is the most fun thing there is.
learning is more fun than drugs.
learning is more fun than sex.
the more you learn, the more you can do.

you can earn a quite comfortable living on nothing more than the knowledge that you have in your head.

the big secret in the black community is that knowledge is fun!

oh yeah, that adolescence is the roughest time of life but it will one day pass.

The other brothers have echoed my sentiments, leaving not much 2 be added.

A man holds his family dear & close to him.
A man honors & respects his mother, father, siblings, woman, & children so much so that if anything or person were 2 threaten their liives, he would unhesitantly lay his life on the line 2 protect them.

A man acknowledges his personal strengths & weaknesses & strives 2 strengthen his weaknesses.

A man has no problems admitting when he is wrong, will apologize & will try 2 right his wrongs.

A man takes the time necessary to help his loved ones better themselves whether it be scholastically, physically, mentally, spiritually, etc.
