    Concerns grow in Europe over threat from deadly pig virus

    [IMG]

    France is expected to suspend pig-related imports from a number of countries as worries grow over the spread of a deadly swine virus.

    Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea Virus (PEDv) has killed some seven million piglets in the US in the past year.

    The disease has also been found in Canada, Mexico and Japan.

    Zoetis Granted Conditional License for PEDV Vaccine
    Sep 3, 2014 Source: Zoetis

    Pork producers will have a new vaccine option in the battle against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). Zoetis Inc. announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted a conditional license for a PEDV vaccine.

    The two-dose inactivated vaccine, licensed for use in healthy pregnant sows and gilts, is designed to help them develop antibodies that can be transmitted to their newborn piglets. Zoetis anticipates the vaccine will be available to veterinarians and pork producers in late September 2014.

    “This vaccine is an important part of our commitment to working with veterinarians and pork producers to help minimize the impact of PEDV on pigs in their care,” says Gloria Basse, vice president, U.S. Pork Business Unit, Zoetis. “To achieve the best possible results, producers should work closely with their veterinarians and the Zoetis technical services team to implement the new vaccine into their biosecurity programs.”

    Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PED virus or PEDV) is a coronavirus that infects the cells lining the small intestine of a pig, causing porcine epidemic diarrhoea, a condition of severe diarrhea and dehydration. Older hogs mostly get sick and lose weight after being infected, whereas newborn piglets usually die within five days of contracting the virus. PEDV cannot be transmitted to humans, nor contaminate the human food supply.

    Ok, the last sentence made me say "huh??"

    This information claims:
    Transmission is via the faecal-oral route.

    It was first discovered in Europe, but has become increasingly problematic in Asian countries, such as Korea, China, Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand. It has also spread to North America: it was discovered in the United States on May 5, 2013 in Indiana,

    The process of transmission may be simple or involve multiple steps. Some examples of routes of fecal-oral transmission include:

    • water that has come in contact with feces and is then inadequately treated before drinking;
    • food that has been prepared in the presence of fecal matter;
    • disease vectors, like houseflies, spreading contamination from inadequate fecal disposal;
    • poor or absent cleaning after handling feces or anything that has been in contact with it;
    • sexual practices that may involve oral contact with feces, such as anilingus or coprophilia.

    This image and discussion on the so called "Ebola spread" had me thinking as well...

    Bloody diarrhea, high fever hallmark of bacterial disease on the rise in Kalamazoo County

    June 27, 2014
    KALAMAZOO, MI -- State health officials are helping Kalamazoo County health workers try to track the source or sources of a nasty bacterial intestinal bug that has taken a leap in numbers here since April.

    While the investigation continues, the public's best protection is thorough, soapy hand washing, said Mike Phillips, disease surveillance nurse, Kalamazoo Community Health and Community Services.

    Since April, Kalamazoo County has been logging more cases than usual of shigellosis, an acute bacterial disease involving the intestinal tract, with 29 cases so far this year. A more typical year sees fewer than eight cases, Phillips said in an interview Friday. The incidence of the disease in other counties--nonexistent or at those typically low numbers-- can be seen in the Michigan Department of Community Health's Weekly Surveillance Report.

    The lab-confirmed cases from Kalamazoo County come from seven zip
    codes in the county and include children and adults of both sexes, he said.

    Ages range from 2 to 78 years old.

    Shigella infection (shigellosis) is an intestinal disease caused by a family of bacteria known as shigella. The main sign of shigella infection is diarrhea, which often is bloody.

    Shigella can be passed through direct contact with the bacteria in the stool. For example, this can happen in a child care setting when staff members don't wash their hands well enough after changing diapers or helping toddlers with toilet training. Shigella bacteria also can be passed in contaminated food or by drinking or swimming in contaminated water.

    Children between the ages of 2 and 4 are most likely to get shigella infection. A mild case usually clears up on its own within a week. When treatment is needed, doctors generally prescribe antibiotics.
