A small but growing number of cash-strapped communities are printing their own money.

Borrowing from a Depression-era idea, they are aiming to help consumers make ends meet and support struggling local businesses.

The systems generally work like this: Businesses and individuals form a network to print currency. Shoppers buy it at a discount — say, 95 cents for $1 value — and spend the full value at stores that accept the currency. Click here for more

Do you all think this is something viable for African Americans?

The Hasidim in Brooklyn have been doing this for over 100 years but after all the warnings from Elijah and Malcolm we still do not own the stores ans sources of food clothing and sheler in our communities across the nation

hell, we don't even have a Black version of Kmart or Costco, so really who would accept it?

Brother Knowledge Seed ... Peace and Blessings,

I don't know if it would work for us, but it's the kind of extreme (out of the box) thinking needed, to get us out of this mess we're in.

At this point, I'm open to trying anything reasonably worthwhile, since nothing tried yet has delivered optimum results.

Thanks for sharing!

First, thank God for the Internet, second, thank you my young brother friend for the continued effort to unite our people with innovative ways and pursuits for survival. Its just a matter of getting started, to answer your question.

Susan Witt started printing her own money and spending it around town

Susan Witt is an middle-aged woman who drives a Volvo around her quaint Rockwell-esque town and has somehow managed to foment a small revolution. After the years of planning, Susan started printing her own money. She printed on fine-grain paper and distributed to banks. 835,000 worth of notes were printed. She is the founder of Berkshares, a local currency that was introduced last fall in Southern Berkshire, Mass.
