We all remember the minor "beef" between Common Sense (AKA Common) and Ice Cube (AKA Cube), but if not here is a reminder:

Nice classic that was an ode to Hip Hop, and still is

I played this tape so much it broke

But see wha had happened waaaa... Cube and Westside Connection found offense to these lines:

But then she broke to the west coast and that was cool
cause around the same time, I went away to school
and I'm a man of expanding, so why should I stand in her way
she'd probably get her money in LA

and she did stud, she got big pub but what was foul
she said that the pro black was going out of style
she said afrocentricity was of the past
she got into r&b, hip hop, bass, and jazz

Now black music is black music and it's all good
I wasn't salty she was with the boyz in the hood

When the line above is heard, this visual can be seen in the video...

Obvious dig at Cube and west coast crew(s), but facts are facts.
When it went "west", it got twisted up, or like Common said, it was "expanding".

But Cube and company felt the need to fire back, and so they did.

All you suckas wanna dis the pacific
but you busta ni...s never get specific
Used to love HER, mad that we f'd her
P...y whipped b...h, with no Common Sense
Hip Hop started in the west, Ice Cube bailing through the East without a vest

    • Cube was the only one to drop on Common, so this was a one on one thing happening.

Obviously, Common Sense (AKA Common), couldn't just let a direct hook land without the response, and boy did he respond!

Can't find the better version that was on a Relativity various artists sampler, might just pull it out of my collection and upload it, but it's generally the same.

    Found the better version
    http://www.rapbasement.com/videos/309059/common-the-*****-in-yoo.html

Still one of the best tracks that wasn't on an album, but one of the more riskiest one's of Common's career.

What are they doing 20 years later?
How about making a movie together, Barbershop: The Next Cut...

    Got to love brotherhood

    Respect

I never knew Common was a rapper or singer. I always thought he was just a bad actor. I always liked his dress style and presentation in conversations or interviews though.

    :puke: No singing, hip hop

Yea, his acting is average. His role on Hell On Wheels was interesting though.
But Common Sense has been an MC along with No ID (IlliNoid) as the producer. Kanye came up under them and began producing.

Resurrection was never a commercial record (one of his more recognized recordings), nor has any of his material been.

This is probably why one never knew he was a rapper, he was essentially what we would call "underground rap", which is actually "hip hop".

He has a few lyrics about hip hop being commercialized in I Used To Love H.E.R.
Commercialized or mainstream "rappers" couldn't put out a song entitled...

    A song for Assata

Why would they (culture vultures) desire to promote and display this?

    Respect

"The only race on the planet is the human one.... spread love"
"I don't care what your color is, all my real people real people love this"

    "Be the change"

Is this just a matter of maturity or promotional strategy to reach larger markets?

    What did Khalid say?

"I'm colorblind, only thing I can see is black"
He got on that white devil kick too, but that whole message has switched since then.

This is some twilight zone stuff!

    Ice Cube:

"Hip hop, we used to didn't even be down with drugs, you know at all... it used to be a no no"

This actually came out of "Ice Cube's" mouth, seriously...???
I mean I know he is trying to be a good role model now for the sake of family, but this revisionist history stuff seems to be poorly thought out.

Yea, Dopeman was "anti crack", but the weed was fair game I suppose...

These are Ice Cube's words from N.W.A.'s "Gangsta Gangsta 1988":

    Here's a little somethin' bout a n.... like me
never shoulda been let out the penititary
Ice Cube would like ta say
That I'm a crazy mutha f...a from around the way
Since I was a youth, I smoked weed out
Now I'm the mutha f...a that ya read about
    Takin' a life or two
that's what the hell I do, you don't like how I'm livin
    well f... you!
This is a gang, and I'm in it
My man Dre'll f... you up in a minute
With a right left, right left you're toothless
And then you say g.....mn they ruthless!
    Everwhere we go they say[d...!]
    N W A's f....n' up tha program
And then you realize we don't care
We don't just say no, we too busy sayin' yeah!
To drinkin' straight out the eight bottle
Do I look like a mutha f.....n role model?
To a kid lookin' up ta me
Life ain't nothin but b....s and money.
Cause I'm tha type o' ***** that's built ta last
If ya **** wit me I'll put a foot in ya ***
    See I don't give a f... 'cause I keep bailin
Yo, what the f... are they yellin

I mean his name is "ICE CUBE"... which is another slang for "Crack", which was part of the image to sell the gangster persona.

As I've heard many claim, it's just entertainment.

Life is a movie, life is a metaphor... don't take all of this too seriously because the game will remain the same, only the players change.
