Black voters in swing states may have cost Clinton the election
Audience members listen as Hillary Clinton campaigns with First Lady Michelle Obama on Oct. 27, 2016, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
President Barack Obama, a bona fide legend in the African American community, urged the community to vote for her and protect his legacy. R&B megastar Beyonce and backup dancers shimmied in pantsuits at a rally for her. Kerry Washington, Shonda Rhimes and other black Hollywood stars cut a campaign video on her behalf.
And as her presidential campaign against Republican Donald Trump came down to the wire, Hillary Clinton herself stepped to the mic on "The Tom Joyner Morning Show," a popular, nationally syndicated radio program, to make her case to black voters.
"The choice is clear. The stakes couldn't be higher," she told the hosts, warning that a Trump presidency could set black America back decades. "I'm going to do everything that I can to make people realize that this is not one you can sit out."
Yet on Tuesday, the constituency that surged to the polls for Obama in record numbers -- fiercely punching far above its weight to support and defend the first black president -- didn't answer the call for Clinton, his chosen successor.
