Eastpointe pays $160,000 in black youth profiling suit
EASTPOINTE, Mich. A mostly white suburb of mostly black Detroit has agreed to pay 160-thousand dollars to settle a lawsuit that claimed police profiled young black males.
The federal suit said police stopped and searched young black bicycle riders because of their race.
The settlement involves 12 plaintiffs remaining from the 21 who originally sued.
The American Civil Liberties Union joined the suit in 2001.
Eastpointe didn't admit any wrongdoing.
The 2000 U-S Census said about five percent of Eastpointe's 34-thousand residents were black, while about 83 percent of Detroit's 951-thousand residents were black.
