    the negativity
    the put-downs
    the lack of support
    the lack of reinforcement
    the suppression
    the life and death atmosphere
    the silence
    the absence of love
    the isolation
    the domineering
    once upon a time
    - 20 years ago to be exact -
    I dared to speak against
    the family illness
    by acting out I
was louder than my voice ever
    could have been
    emancipation came with ostracism
    they labeled me crazy
    troublemaker
    shatterer of peace
    messed up
    ironic it was
    a no-win situation
    but year by year and
    little by little I
    overcame their resentment and
    persecution until it became
    water down the drain
so my brother's awakening caught me by surprise
he finally saw what had been happening and
could even look through my eyes
    acknowledge it, oh, he is
and this christmas he gave me the ultimate gift
I saw what you saw, he said
    you weren't the only one
    you weren't crazy
    there's something wrong with them
as if this wasn't gold enough
"you had it harder than me because
    you were the first"
that he hadn't understood what I was
going through because he was so young
and he thanked me for leading us
both out of town to where we are now
    not alone anymore
    it's such a relief
    in each other we can
    seek therapy
    knowing your dysfunctions and
    how they came about is
    more than half the battle
puts power in our hands to
    move forward to what's natural
    if I live to be 100 I'll
    still be surprised
at how it's always the unexpected
    that becomes your greatest guide
the growth this year has been painful
    I want it to end
    but I know ultimately I'll
    look back and be glad
    this last-minute gift has
    put me at ease
    I say goodbye to 2004
    I feel peace

this poem seems to be the relief of a long journey. And that's the best gift, to be able to have been lifted from something you thought would destroy you. I really enjoyed this one. Very insightful, keep the flow goin...
