This question is geared for any faith or belief system, though I am particularly interested in the opinions of 'liberal' Christians (those that do not necessarily believe Christianity is the only path to heaven and/or that the Bible is not God's word etched in stone).

Do you believe Christianity would have less problems if it promoted only the New Testament, specifically just the words of Jesus? I don't recall during my Christian days Jesus ever saying or doing anything barbaric (unlike some of the Biblical characters in the Old Testament). It seems that all of the evils that Christianity has been used to support were because of references to the Old Testament (slavery, sexism, etc.).

Jesus is the God of the old testament and Jesus said the same things in the new testament that was said in the old testament which is that if you dont believe in him you will not have salvation and any christian that tells you that Jesus isnt the only way to salvation is not really a christian.

{sigh} this is a response I would expect from an orthodox Christian.

You really believe that the stuff in the Old Testament is from the heart of God, huh?

The easiest and clearest answer as to why "true" Christians believe in the Old Testament is that Christ believed it. We trust His teachings. The Lord Jesus Christ is our final authority in all matters. Jesus believed in the Old Testament and taught its truth.

Christ is quoted many times in the New Testament teaching his disciples and the people from the Old. All the claims of Christ of his person and deity are based on the claims of the Old Testament which clearly point to the coming Savior. For Christians to doubt the Old Testament is to doubt Jesus. If we believe Jesus, we will believe the Old Testament.

    Simple as that!

Thank You Jowillie for pointing that fact out .People who keep saying that Jesus didnt say the things that the old testament God said clearly dont study scripture closely enough. Jesus talked about all through the new testament how people who dont believe in him will burn in hellfire and how he was the only way to heaven and but poeple have blinded themselves to this fact. Satan has deceived so many people (even some Christians) into thinking that the bible is just a bunch of mythical stories written by men .

(Do you believe Christianity would have less problems if it promoted only the New Testament, specifically just the words of Jesus?)Christianity will always have "problems" no matter, just like any belief system.
We are warned about these problems and the cause of them
in Christianity. Wolves comming in aware, merchandising the gospel, silly women being lead astray, falling away of the church, men who wont recieve sound doctrin, ect. the list goes on and on.In the last days of this age, it only gets worse, especially when they heap upon themselves teachers, and preachers that are clearly NOT called by God to lead them. People now days specifically ignore the words of Jesus, especially pastors, most will quote Paul or their favorite false TBN minister and give you what they said, rather then what Jesus said and taught. Its rather sad actually.so many sheep being lead astray. :crying:

I feel you sister. It seems that Christians do indeed focus on the New Testament, only dealing with the OT as it relates to the NT.

However, an up-close view of the OT, would place even the most common-sensical person in emotional and spiritual turmoil, what with the infinite laudable, questionable acts, all proclaime to take place under the auspices of "God".

Belief can be a very dangerous thing.

    PEACE

I can see God in both the Old and New Testaments, can't have one without the other.Only these "modern" churchs that are springing up all over the place like the b******d kids of the church of rome that they are... (the great whore,) are you told to only read and study the New Testament.

How do you see God in parts of the OT that we could consider barbaric in today's culture?

Well, we still have barbaric things today, just like then. theres nothing new under the sun. When one is disobediant, God acts, he did it then, he does it now, people cannot see God for looking right at Him.
