New evidence coming in Chris Christie's Bridgegate scandal?

A New Jersey legislative panel investigating the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge orchestrated by aides of Gov. Chris Christie (R) as an act of political retribution are moving to obtain text messages that Democrats believe could uncover further details of the extent of Christie’s knowledge of the closures.
Christie has repeatedly said he had no knowledge of or involvement in the closures, which snarled traffic on the bridge and caused problems for the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., for four days.
But the legislative panel is subpoenaing AT&T for records of all calls and texts during the month of December between Christie and Regina Egea. Egea was the governor’s liaison to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the bridge.

Port Authority Officer Told Not To Reopen George Washington Bridge Lanes

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Police officers on the George Washington Bridge last September during lane closures apparently ordered by Republican Gov. Chris Christie's aides as political payback said they warned superiors about the hazardous conditions created and were told not to talk about it on their radios, according to a summary provided by their lawyer to a legislative panel investigating the scandal.

Attorney Dan Bibb, who works for the union representing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officers, relayed information from 11 officers, including at least three who said they were told about the traffic change by a lieutenant who ordered them not to move the traffic cones blocking the lanes. Bibb's comments were included in a synopsis obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Chris Christie says he's growing tired of legislative committee investigating bridge scandal

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie answers a question during a news conference after he announced that he has chosen Jamie Fox, a former top aide to Democratic Gov. Jim McGreevey, to be New Jersey's new transportation commissioner Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, in Trenton, N.J. Democratic lawmakers quickly praised Christie's choice, an indication that Fox will not have a hard time being confirmed by the state Senate. (AP Photo/Mel Evans)

The remarks were some of Christie's harshest yet against the committee, which includes both Republicans and Democrats.

Reacting to the comments, Wisniewski said the governor's office had refused to turn over some documents the committee had requested, claiming executive privilege, which he said "flies in the face of his pledge to cooperate fully."

NBC: Chris Christie didn't know about or order George Washington Bridge closure plot

The Justice Department investigation is ongoing, but if the final report exculpates Christie, "that's good news for him," Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist polling organization, tells NBC. "The bad news remains that politically as chief executive it looks like he was not in control of his administration at the time when this occurred. So that remains the downside for him. That doesn't go away but this panel provides greater credibility barring any further revelations coming out."

Christie, his former aides, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are subjects of at least one ongoing New Jersey state investigation, too.

NBC News admits error in its Christie-cleared report

Chris Christie (Chris Usher/Associated Press)

It’s always tricky to report on high-profile federal investigations that are in progress. But that’s no excuse for “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams, who delivered a report last night about the “Bridgegate” probe involving New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R). Williams said that “federal charges are now ruled out” for the embattled governor, who is regarded as a serious contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

As reported in the Asbury Park Press today, however, NBC News has backtracked on this information. “An unscripted line of our Nightly News report was imprecise and implied that a final decision had been reached,” noted NBC News spokeswoman Erika Masonhall, according to the newspaper.
