Prosecutors will not pursue Bridgegate charges against New Jersey governor

... The Office of the Bergen County Prosecutor said in a letter to a local judge it did not have sufficient evidence to prove allegations that Christie knew about a plot to close lanes at the George Washington Bridge in 2013 in order to punish a local mayor for failing to endorse Christie's re-election bid.

"The reason is simple, but compelling - that charge cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt," the letter said ...

FILE- In this Aug. 29, 2016 file photo, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie listens to a question from the media in Trenton, N.J. Christie's week started with photos showing him lounging on a public beach closed by the state shutdown going viral across the globe. Next week doesn't promise the same kind of international response, but the term-limited Republican's name could be in the headlines again over the so-called Bridgegate scandal when his former aide is sentenced and the attorney who represented him during the scandal gets a Senate hearing to be the next FBI director. What Trump Can Learn from the Fall of Chris Christie

... Christie’s downfall is a lesson for Trump on the limits of tough talk, what entertains in a town hall doesn’t play nearly as well on Capitol Hill. Infrastructure, immigration, entitlement reform—these won’t be solved with threats on Twitter, Christie’s supporters expected more, so do the Donald’s.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie looked like the G.O.P.’s brightest presidential prospect on September 9, 2013, when the orange safety cones on the George Washington Bridge were mysteriously re-arranged, closing several toll lanes. The massive, four-day traffic nightmare that resulted may end up scuppering Christie’s 2016 chances. Bryan Burrough investigates one of the craziest political scandals in recent history

Former Christie allies: Bridge realignment didn't break law

... Attorneys for Bill Baroni and Bridget Kelly acknowledged that even if the motivation for realigning the lanes at the bridge, causing traffic jams in the town of Fort Lee was to punish its mayor for not endorsing Christie, that wasn't a crime under federal law. The lanes still were being used for a public purpose and not to benefit either defendant, the attorneys argued.
