I have a question. If you meet a person in a chat room and chat with them for months on end, establishing a repore with them, WITHOUT ever having met them in person, can the two people be considered friends?

Eventually I will know his/her race because some of the issues we will talk about will betray their feelings.

True, but my question does not revolve around know what race they are, it's about whether or not you can be friends with a person without meeting them.

    Yes!!!!

The whole point of "meeting" someone face to face is to exchange ideas and to get to know one another. You can do this on line as well.

I feel it is most definitely possible to become friends with someone in a chat room. If you have exchanged information about yourselves and have lengthy conversations that is how you are getting to know each other and in some respects you will know them better without actually meeting them face to face. The only thing that the actual meeting will do is put a face to the person that you have considered a friend on line and possibly even respect.

Of course this is solely dependent upon how honost you are with others.

This is all very true and you make good points, however, what is a friend, is a friend something tangible or not. Better yet, can someone be a best friend online?

Brother Sekhemu ... i have built friendships with many online.

You ask the question as though you never have.

Have you ever developed friendships with folk you've met online?

I've developed aquaintances. To me a friend is someone I spend time with in person, visiting, going to parties, lectures and social events
