Any woman can raise a boy to malehood. But can a single woman raise a boy to manhood?

Sister River ... you seem certain that a woman can raise a boy to malehood, but not manhood.

What's the difference between malehood and manhood?

I do believe a woman can raise a man, though it's not easy.

I'd imagine it's no more easy for a man to raise a girl alone.

Not easy, but it can, and is being done every day.

Big ups to the single parents!

This is a really good question sistah.

My two older brothers and I were raised by a single mother. I don't think she thought she could raise us to be men per se, but she made a concerted effort to expose us to a broad spectrum of culture, music, art and history.

What this did was help mould and shape my character as a black man and gave me a sense of civic responsibility. With much that is given much is expected, and to me it means it is my duty as a black man to lead by example for the black youth in my community.

When I was 6 years old my mother enrolled me in martial arts school. Although she couldn't teach it to me, she understood the importance of building character and patience as emphasized by the repetition of various Katas (forms)... as the foundation of Martial arts, and how it would help me grow into manhood. Not to toot my own horn, but today I find myself teaching children the same things I learned as a 6 year old in the very same setting at no cost to the pupil, 3 nights a week.

My mom was raised by her Grand father in the deep south. He was a philanthropist from Indianola Mississippi. Through his rearing and guidance, she learned many components of the character of a good and productive positive black man, and more importantly, what it takes to cultivate one.

A woman cannot raise a man to be a man but she can let him make himself into a man if she does not hinder him or supress who he is as one. but a man can raise a woman because he shapes her idea of what a man should be.

Brother Oba Iparankanru ... this is interesting ... women can give birth to both male and female, yet we can only raise one ... and men (who can give birth to none) can raise both ... hmmmmm ... interesting opinion.

    Thanks for sharing it.

    No, I'm Not Sure

    Sistah Destee,

I just asked the question for the sake of discussion. I did not mean to imply any preformed answer. This is the general opinion that many people have so it's a logical point from which to start a discussion.

In my opinion both parents are needed. The natural balance created when a mother and father are present in a child's life, can not be replaced by either parent!

Basically, the difference between a male and a man is that the term male applies to all gamete bearing animals who possess a Y chromosone. A man on the other hand is a human male who has developed a charcater that demonstrates his readiness to take his place as an adult with decidedly masculine (not macho) qualities.
