yesterday my son came home from school
    red faced and sweating
wanted to get straight into the pool
i asked he and his brother for their homework
    assignments first
    dinner cookin’ on the stove
    then the pool
    you know
mama always gotta rain on their parade…
but it’s how they get good grades

    my son says to me
mommy my assignment is to bring a backpack to school
buy a backpack for an underprivilidged child
    now mind me
i’m two days from pay day and eyeballin’ that account
    always always
    that school has some amount
that needs to be taken from my pocket

    private school tuition rockets
and now you got me buyin’ a backpack
and now I gotta get back into my expensive suv
and go to walgreens cause I ain’t driving that far
    you see
    where I’m heading with this?
    all funky and mad
    cause of this…assignment
    cheapest backpack I could find
    was $15.99
and I’m still mad you see
cause if they beggin’, then why couldn’t they ask
for pencils or erasers or some other minor task
    why they need a backpack?

    the next day comes
    i go through my sons
    assignments
and inside i see a certificate
it says that he has participated in the backpack program
for children that have been taken from their homes by the state
who often don’t have time to pack a thing
and these backpacks are something that they can call their own
    something to hold on to
    something new
    and just for them
    the tears started to flow
    i felt so selfish
    you know?
taking babies out of their homes
i know they’re probably scared and alone
i’m holding this certificate and bawling
    my son says
    it’s alright mommy…you didn’t know
    you didn’t know…

    sista redlady

This piece is most honest, and touches me deeply. In my work, I meet these children who have been "detained" by the courts...and it is something that can hardly be described.

You are indeed blessed to have a son who has this kind of compassion. And yes, our children teach us about unselfishness and love on the daily.

    Thank you for this.

...i read this & like you, found myself crying.

    sometimes... we unintentional-ly take soooo
many things for granted & then we see or are
shown a reminder of how good we actual-ly
got it! (at least that's what i'm takin' with me
from this piece/peace) ...thank you for sharing.

    i thorough-ly enjoyed the read! :)
