On-air news reporters and anchors are pillars of poise. There can be disasters in the world, and mishaps in the newsroom, and they can still get in front of that camera and beam. That’s all the more impressive to us after reading a hurtful, racist letter Las Vegas traffic anchor Demetria Obilor shared on Twitter on Thursday ...

A 17-year-old girl in Tallahassee, Fla., is the latest young woman of color to face disciplinary action at her school because of the way she chose to wear her hair.

For Black Women, It's Never As Simple As 'It's Just Hair'
    June 4, 2017

As golden girls go — she is an original. She is the 2017 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin celebrating the U.S. Mint’s 225th anniversary. This newest Liberty coin features the face of a black woman adorned with a patriotic headband made of stars. Liberty’s stars crown her signature hair style — braids of slim golden ropes neatly tucked into a bun, the ends trailing down the nape of her neck.

These braids are just like the ones Deanna and Mya Cook wore at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School. The school said the braids violated the school’s dress code

There’s been plenty of judgement about the new gold coin featuring Lady Liberty with braids, and sales are lagging. But, a small victory for the Cook family. Mystic Valley Regional Charter School has lifted its braid ban, though the school maintains it was never racially motivated. Deanna and Mya, I’m happy that you can wear a hairstyle that makes you feel good about who you are. Welcome to the club.

    CURLFEST

New York's Coolest New Festival Has Nothing To Do With Music
    KHALEA UNDERWOOD

Festivals are synonymous with fashion, yummy food, amazing bands, and nearly-unbearable weather conditions. And, of course, hair. Some of the boldest (and budding) trends debut at some of the biggest, including Coachella and Afropunk. But, with all due respect, we've got a new contender to take the crown: Brooklyn's very own Curlfest, held at Prospect Park this past weekend.

What the heck is CurlFest? Well, you still get all of the fashion, food, and music that your heart desires. But this event, free to all, is a celebration of natural hair and Black beauty. The fourth annual event, dreamt up by the Curly Girl Collective, has already reached "It" status.
