Interesting back stories... if we are to believe these:

Where Beyonce, Black Lives Matter and global history collide: The 'Black Power' salute at West Point

...
But some have suggested that the women took inspiration not from black revolutionaries but from pop culture -- specifically, Beyonce, who used the salute during her controversial Super Bowl halftime show performance of the song "Formation." Others have said the women were simply celebrating their upcoming graduation.

...

Although the raised fist may be best known in the United States for its association with the Black Power movement, its origins and use are much broader, from ancient Assyria to the Spanish Civil War. Over the years, the symbol has simultaneously been used by leftists, white nationalists and black activists -- all for very different purposes.

Beyoncé knew nothing about her Super Bowl performance being hijacked for Black Lives Matter protest about police shooting by activists who smuggled posters into stadium in their panties

It was a grainy cellphone video and a picture that were seen by millions around the world.

But the full story of how Beyoncé was unwittingly dragged into a political row after having her Super Bowl performance hijacked by her dancers and activists can be revealed.

The star knew nothing about the decision by members of her dance troupe to join a protest by members of the Black Lives Matters organization on the field of the Levi's Stadium about the death of Mario Jones until the video went viral the next morning.

Not sure about it being her performance being "hijacked", as this was after the performance, off of the field.

But interesting still

Seems many have used and still use this gesture, so what's the issue again?

I mean why else make the gesture if one doesn't desire to defend it and stand on what they believe?

White Nationalist have it and they don't shy away, but when these 16 "African American" make the gesture, they back away or hide from having done it?

Looking at the image, at least two could pass a "white", just saying.
So really can't say this is racist.

Not sure if it's because some perceive these connections to "anti-american" sentiments lately

But would like to hear what the women have to say in regards to what they were expressing and stand on it. And they can't claim "we were just doing it for fun", as this was a collective conscious decision for them to strike the pose.

Defend your stance.
Black Power, Kill Whitey, Off The Pig, Hate America, Fight Oppression, Socialism Rocks, Strong Unity, We Graduated, F' Yo Flag??

What was this about?

And they just graduated from a US Military Academy?

So much irony in this, really would like to hear what the women have to say though.
Pseudo "Black Panthers" and "revolutionaries" are an interesting study in the meme phenomenon.

Bobby Seale spoke on the New Black Panthers and Black Lives Matter...

On the “Black Lives Matter” Movement convening in Cleveland, Ohio on July 24th…

According to Bobby, “Dumb Riots will not get real change. Real people’s constitutional democratic civil-human rights revolution is not about a need for violence. In fact, three days after Martin Luther King was killed, I went out to north Richmond, CA to stop a riot in that community where I had worked to set up the first youth jobs tutorial program in that city. The black people in that community knew me through my program and when I asked the youth to stop rioting and go home, they complied.

On the New Black Panther Party…

Mr. Seale’s response to the New Black Panther Party is to refuse to endorse them because of their racist RHETORIC and their past support of the terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. In Houston, Texas, late October 2014, at a NAABPP reunion, Bobby was verbally harassed by a New Black Panther advocate saying Mr. Seale supported “white people’s rights and that is not right!” As far as Mr. Seale is concerned, “I do NOT support this NEW BP in secret as I hear it has been stated them. Furthermore this New Black Panther Party I believe is led by some kind of behind the scenes government infiltration encouraging young unconscious black youth to say such erroneous crap while spewing racist rhetoric that is totally antithetic to my sixties Black Panther Party Principles: ‘all power to all the people.’ To correct what the New Black Panthers say what I support, in my words: ‘…..constitutional democratic civil-human rights for all humanity on the face of this earth.’”

Is Bobby just smacking his gums or is there merit to what he is saying?

Truth be told, these sisters don't owe anyone an explanation, and there might not BE any explanation. As you posted the pic of Bernie Sanders with his clench fist raised... No one is riding Sanders. In general, the clenched, raised fist has simply meant Black Pride. Tell these folks "Paranoia will destroy ya". JMO

Welcome to the world or racism white supremacy answers the question.

Black women at West Point caught up in photo controversy

... West Point officials decided last week that the photo was not politically motivated and no punishment was warranted. Still, that outcome left some black female graduates confused: Why would anyone see controversy in how those 16 women celebrated their experience in the Long Gray Line? ...

In this photo taken May 13, 2016, Mary Tobin, wearing her West Point class ring, poses for picture in Washington, Friday, May 13, 2016. Self-expression is hardly a part of life for cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point.Tobin, who has mentored other black women cadets since graduating in 2003, said the experience is one rarely discussed publicly.
