Black Prodigy’s Admission to UConn Revoked

    by Jorge Rivas

Thirteen-year-old Autum Ashante is a child prodigy. She could read at age 2, and by 3 she was writing and performing poetry. Less than ten years later, at the age of 12, the Bronx native graduated high school and is now widely known as a poet, United Nations youth ambassador, speaker, and activist. But now it’s her poetry that conservatives have latched onto and made a fuss about. And in the hoopla, the teenager’s college dreams may be at stake.
Earlier this year Ashante was accepted at the University of Connecticut, where she planned to study medicine starting this August. Her single father, who home schooled her and recruited retired teachers to tutor Ashante, planned to move to Connecticut this summer before she started her college career.
“What she’s doing is groundbreaking but this is not about vanity,” Ashante’s father told NY Daily News. “It’s about setting the tone for other black and Latino children who will come behind her. They’re always being told they are underachievers. We want to show this can be done.”
But two weeks ago, the University of Connecticut rescinded her acceptance, declaring her not “academically ready”— although she has an IQ test score of 149. (The average college graduate has an IQ score of 115).
Ashante’s father, a 50-year-old retired corrections officer, told NewsOne that his daughter is “devastated.”

This really is a shame. I remember when I first heard of her acceptance and was filled with joy of her accomplishments at such a young age. UCONN has just given her a lift to better opportunities, she WILL go far!

wow....The dad says she was "accepted" and then later "rejected."

UConn says she was never "accepted" in the first place. So, no "rescinding" occurred.

This situation is like Obama and his birth certificate.

The only way to prove UConn is lying is for Dad to produce an "acceptance letter" from UConn.

rejections to colleges happen all the time.. they may have changed their minds based on her age.. A 13 year old on a college campus is a huge safety issue.. I don't Uconn is prepared to change the way they do business for a single student.. prodigy or not.. she needs a special program.. one that takes her immaturity into consideration.. It was nice to see a positive story about a Single Father though..

With the above presented facts.... Can we seriously tell ourselves that UCONN made a Non-Biased decision based on equality to ALL students???

Being sued for age discrimination is exactly the kind of thing Im talking about. Why should a school that is setup for adults risk this kind of gnashing of teeth for a couple of students? Their ages present considerable challenges to the institutions they attend.

So would you say that they are trying to prevent from having to "Walk on Egg Shells" and "Pamper" a few students at the risk of financial loss???

Basically a Business decision dealing with the politics involved and Past issues such as the above cited suit filed by "Colin Carlson"???

equality? non-biased? .. at some point we as a people are going to have recognize that those are bullish## words and concepts that do not exist in nature or society. Everything is biased.. and equality is a completely ambiguous term.. the powerful will never ever mitigate their own advantage. At some point we are going to have to stop being suprised.. if we can be killed in broad daylight with impunity, then of course we can be excluded from a college.

I think that is very likely. If it were my decision to make, I would probably do the same thing.. a black female underagedd student is a litigation nightmare.. age, race, gender.. look at all the attention she getting just about admissions... iimagine if their was some other issue later down the line.. you got the naacp.. al sharpton.. and the mainstream media.. that would bee the end of some administrators career.. why risk it?
