    Behind concrete walls
    Black men lift weights
    Building their bodies
While their minds dance without music
    Waiting for nothing

    A cold stare
    Through colder eyes
    They look through concertina wire
Searching for a bird, a field mouse
    Anything that is free

    Black men lifting weights
    Others playing basketball
A distant armed guard the referee
    Through Rayban sunglasses
He watches from atop the wall

    Black men lifting weights
    Looking strong
    Looking good
    They would be somewhere else
    If only they could

They would be with their families
    Saying "I'll never go back"
They would find a job...any job
    Not steal from their children
    They wouldn't sell crack

    Black men lifting weights
Thinking of how to do the right thing
Touching loved ones through three-inch glass
Snickering guards search what they bring
"Wait for me baby, it won't be too long"
"Send me a tape of my kids singing their school song"

    Black men lifting weights
Orange jumpsuits one behind the other
Black men that are sons, fathers, brothers, lovers
Life's darker side became their fates
    Rather than face life's challenges
So many Black men would rather lift weights

in record numbers...while the others wonder WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING. and why you put yourself in a position to be slaves with overseers...still saying, "massah, can i???"

    this is..

    sad truth for too many....

if only we could look forward and see the consequences of our actions, then maybe we would stop before we start...

or maybe if we lose the idea that we are infallable or invincible, and stop thinking it can't happen to us....

    too many what ifs.....

Thank you poets. As black remains the dominate shade behind prison walls, I pray the young brothers take on the challenges which with strength and determination they can overcome and lift weights in the gym.
