Black men continue to lead in hypertension statistics

One to three adults in the United States will have hypertension, high blood pressure, in their lifetimes. The condition can be a predecessor for heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.

"Approximately 41 percent of African American males have nearly double the incidence of high blood pressure, compared to their Caucasian counterparts," said Dr. Anil Hingorani, a vascular surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. "Black Americans are more likely to have diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking issues, and high salt and fat in their diet — all risk factors for developing high blood pressure. In addition, they develop high blood pressure at younger ages than other ethnic groups in the United States and are more likely to have complications associated with high blood pressure, including stroke, kidney disease, blindness, dementia and heart disease."

    Destee,
Thank you sis for posting this info.I specifically logged on to submit some info about hypertension. Just wanted to enourage everyone to start small. Visit the doctor, add more fruits and vegtables to your diet and walk at least 30-45 min a day, reduce your salt intake and its that simple..Your on your way to a healthier life. Just wanted to add that I am on this journey as well for myself, and am encouraging our people to do the same.

Chi Gung and Tai Chi can aide tremendously as well.

If one is into the yogic traditions, pranayama is what one will want to engage in.

These statistics are serious for these chronic diseases. Here in the Caribbean and in Barbados it is a serious problem. The eating habits of blacks must be changed. Our attituded must change.

I visited the supermarket last week and a black brother was telling the cashier how he suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure. The girl asked him if he is taking his medication...He said gurl I don't pay that kinda thing any attention. When I feel like it I take the medication.:(She said you know you must stop with the drinking... he said I only drink a little.

I, personally, would be interested in the eating habits of our ancient ancestors.
