Black Man
Just through circumstance
We come to be in this foreign land
And there’s one thing we’ve known from then til now
We grow as we fully comprehend
That the pain will never end
Sitting on a porch barefoot
Taking in the cold of the wind
Looking up into an empty sky
Just missing friends
Missing a time
Though I can’t remember a time
When everyone lived righteously
Free to live, free to love
Now that’s what I call liberty
I sit and wait on a project wall
Patiently
For Babylon to fall
Lords of lords, kings of kings
Imagine living in a state of royalty
And no one knowing what that really means
Because through the physical eyes it just can’t be seen
But then the spiritual takes over
And I see things in you
Things about yourself
That I bet you never knew
And my spirit throws rose petals at your feet
Every time we meet
I’m well aware that they don’t acknowledge
His lordship, His Imperial Majesty (H.I.M)
And it’s because of that
Simply because of that
You were forced to trim
They told you that if you looked like them
Then it would be easier to prosper
Maybe get a really good job
Translation: if you don’t then you’ll starve
And though loving you sometimes feels like a chore
Only a king could have made me breed
The beautiful children that I bore
And when that time comes
Whenever that time is
When you’ll want to give up because your heart is sore
Then you’ll see baby, that’s when I’ll love you more
Holding you up
Pushing you forward
To the things that lie wait in the distance
All the dreams that we look toward
Just through circumstance
We come to be in this here land
But I will never lose sight of a king
Whose reflection smiles
A beautiful black man

Lataisha Nicole,

Very tight, very meaningful, and very right:

I sit and wait on a project wall
Patiently
For Babylon to fall
Lords of lords, kings of kings
Imagine living in a state of royalty
And no one knowing what that really means
